Just bought the car with 63K on it. Everything seemed alright, my friend before had volvo do the whole recall thing at the dealer so the ETM should be up to date. Anyway, I was driving around the block at only 25mph or so when the check engine light comes up and the computer read out on the left said, Transmission Service Urgent. I dont have the book/manual but what could this mean? I am having the timing belt and all that fun stuff replaced on tuesday to avoid future headaches, but beyond that what could this mean? Drove fine, shifted fine, starts up fine. Any advice would be cool... Thanks

Tech thinks it is probably the ABS module

http://www.volvo-forums.com/index.php?show...+service+urgent

You should get the car's codes pulled using OBD scanner at the dealer or Volvo indy first.

If it is ABS module, search ebay for recon units.

Also you can try Victor

Your previous post says the car drives fine except for the message.

I would not jump to any conclusions until you get the codes pulled.

I too previously had problems with ABS module which manifested itself with messages such as ''transmission service urgently required'' plus other messages in similar vein -I forget what else , this was about 2 years ago. I had the module allegedly repaired. This lasted a few months and eventually I bought a new one from Volvo for about £700. Problem solved. The heat in the engine bay must make the printed circuit board brittle and soldered connections fail.

"Transmission Service Urgent" translates in English from Swedish as "Get Rid of This Car!" Read carefully around the numerous forums available. You'll find a common thread among 99-00 S-80 owners: problems. I have spent 6500 since the Certified Pre-Owned ran out, my "new" transmission failed with only 25K on it, and my bills for this car equate to making new car payments for the past two years. I guess when you buy your transmissions from Opel in Poland you get what every other Opel owner got - junk.

If you are reading these forums to help make your decision, you should know: Volvo has made (and currently makes) much better models - stay away from S-80's made before 2004.

I have a 99 Volvo S80 2.9 L Non-Turbo with almost 300,000 Km (188,000 Miles) on it.
When it had around 250,000 km on it I had the "Transmission service Urgent" light come on with lots of others.Tranny shop said I should have the tranny rebuilt immediately. Havent had it done yet.
I replaced the ABS module with a Rebuilt one.Did it myself in the driveway, took about 20 minutes.all the lights went out...No problems since.
Apparently the ABS module gathers wheel speed info, which enables it to keep you in a straight line when braking. This info is monitored by the main computer .If the ABS module is faulty and sending wrong info, the computer thinks your tranny is having problems because the speed ratio is incorrect.
The rebuilt ABS module is a lot cheaper than OEM.
Check out http://www.absmodules.ca/ or http://www.digicontrols.ca/ I got mine from the first one..it works great.

Before jumping to any horrible conclusions, Check the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) level, If its a little low this message comes on or it could be dirty and need changing ;) Worth a try at least.
