Welcome to the forum. How long has this been happening? Only recently? If so, it might be your heater core. sometimes mold will grow because it is a hot and moist environment. As I said, it might. Jiffy lube, or companies like that, sometimes offer a cleaning service for things like this. If your car is still under warranty, it might be better to go to the dealer and have them do it. Hope this helps, I am not that knowledgeable about this particular model, but I had experienced this on other cars of mine.

I suggest replacing your cabin filter. Old filters can cause alot of odor

You can get a new cabin filter on eBay for about 20 or so, but make sure to look to see if your car is equipped with IAQS, this can determine which air filter you need (there are 2 different models)...
Wouldnt he have some smell also with cold air though, if the air filter was the problem?

yes since the air that is filtered would still come from outside. heat or AC, the air is still coming through the filter. doesn't hurt to change it though. try fcpgroton.com for filters, cheaper and it is the correct filter for our volvos.

To be honest, I smell something also when i turbn on the heat but it doesnt smell any different to how my 96 accord smells when i turn on the heat (rarely)...
I just figure it could be because being in florida and not being too old, i tolerate the 'winter' here pretty well...
Its amazing how much the filter takes out from the cabin.. if you take a look at the old one you have, it wil scare you almost
