my sensei, the Haynes Manual, describes replacement of the blower motor on the 850 in about three paragraphs. however, there's no mention of this procedure if the SRS unit is hiding below the trim panel, directly in front where i want to be.

so... do i pull the battery cables, and hope there's not some kind of passive system that'll break my neck? and, if so... where do i find the radio codes on this used vehicle, once the power goes back online?

leave it to me to find a "first project" like this one.

thanks, all.

I agree that it is scary with an airbag inches from your face. I would advise you operate quickly and efficiently. I would leave the battery connected since you do not have the code. I myself have never had a bag go off, ( knock on wood). The only advice I adhere to in all cars is NEVER UNPLUG SRS WIRES WITH KEY IN ON POSITION, AND NEVER TEST THEM. I also do not turn the key back to the ON position unless I COMPLETELY have the SRS system returned to normal. Use your best judgement.

i did, in fact, give my garage a ring to uncover the code (Sharpied on top of the head unit)... but didn't have to disconnect the power, after all.

my "big obstacle" was this black, finned (like a heat sink), metal assembly directly under the glovebox, that sported an alarming SRS sticker. turns out, that was a "knee bolster", with nothing to do with the airbag, after all. after i located the nuts that held it in (conveniently recessed behind large holes for access), it was just a matter of disconnecting the spaghetti of wires and collectors, an wiggling the pestilent blower out.

as much as i rely on Haynes, this was one job where they let me down, a little... though i suppose later models have this bolster, where other models don't.

all's well that ends well, though... and i have warm feet & no squeak!

100.000 thank yous, sensei!
