I just recently replaced the centre console on my V40 and i took off the air con switches and temp knobs to unscrew the old console, when i put the new console in and the temperature knobs and air con controls back in, the lights wouldnt come on.

How do i get them back on?

Please accept my apologies in advance if this appears patronising in any way.
Do the rest of the dash lights turn on, if not then check the fuse.
Prior to installing your replacement did you check to ensure that the bulbs and bulb holders were fitted.
Did you/can you check with an AVO meter whether the bulbs are functioning.
Can you ensure that the connector at the back of the controls is pushed home.
Can you check with an AVO meter as to whether there is a supply in the connector block.

On a side note, the dash should illuminate with the key in position 2 regardless of any light setting.

well, before i replaced the dash, only half the lights were working so one bulb had gone but now, there are no lights working.

im sure that it is completely plugged in so it could be the fuse or it could just be that i need to replace the bulbs completely. i will get round to that and if it doesnt work, then i will just call up the volvo dealership lol

The problem with the volvo dealerships is that they do not carry dashboard bulbs, you will have to either go to a Honda dealership as the accords etc use the same bulbs and holders, a scrap dealer/car breaker or a trip to an electronics store and swapout the bulb in the bulb holder. Shoud you choose the later ensure that it is less than 2.5mm in diameter otherwise it will not fit the bulb holder.
Checking the fuse is a piece of cake, just whip the fuse out and have a quick check to make sure that it is intact.

well, if the fuse isnt the prob, then i will just get a new unit from the scrapper

half the lights were broken when i bought the car a few months ago but once i got it off with a screwdriver (only way i could do it), they all went so i could have hurt the bulb or something.
