Hello,

I would like to know, how do I replace the headlight lens on a volvo 240?
Is there any Scatch or a manual that can explain that?

I know that there's suppose to be a clip somewhere on the lens, that enables taking the lens off the headlight, but I can't find where it is.
Is the metal thing above the headlight supposed to be taken off before I can take it off?

Many Thanks

I just changed out both my headlight lenses because they were scratched and foggy. My 1991 240 sedan was very easy to do and all I needed was a phillips screw driver. First unscrew the two screws holding the side turnsignal lenses and set them aside with the lens and screws. The chrome metal thing above the headlight lens stays on the car but is spring loaded and will move out of the way when you grasp the lens and lift up and pull outward. Once it pops out just reverse the steps to replace with your new lens. Be sure to capture the border of the lens behind the black rubber molding which is next to the center grille.

There were four different headlight arrangements in the 240 series. It sounds like you are describing the 1986-1993 headlights but it really helps if you post the year of your 240 so we can help and not confuse you.

best thing to do is buy a haynes repair manual or something similar.

I've had mine since the day i got the car and it has been a life saver in many home jobs!

Hello All-
I just got in my first accident with my 91 - 240.

My car insurance wants to total my car our if I repair the entire fender & lights. I've decided that I don't want to get rid of my baby, so I'm going to replace the driver's side turn signal as well as the headlamp unit myself. I bought a Chilton book for my car and from the looks of things, I should be able to do it myself.

Luckily all of the lights & wiring still work, so I was able to cover it in plastic and thus, still drivable. Apparently the original battery size was a lot larger than my current battery because the battery hold down plate didn't do it's job, and the battery fell forward and popped the headlight out.

My dad & I are going to go to a European only parts yard to see what we can find for my car.

What are all of your thoughts on replacing the headlamp & turn light units with used parts? Also, any tips you might have are greatly appreciated!

Glad to see the safety systems have worked, sorry that the test happened. Hope you aren't at fault.

Used lights are ok IFF they have completely clean, intact lenses, and the plastics are not breaking up from age/UV/bad handling. Electrically-alway fit new globes, as their age & reliability is indeterminate. check wiring to see it works, and make sure the rubbers aren't perished/missing. screw threads must NOT be stripped. Screws should be in good condition, carefully remove and replace all weathered or damaged ones, or next time they may not come out at all. The clipped together types: the clips should not be rusty, and none missing, 8 is the usual number. Make sure you're getting the side you want, they are different lenses & bodies, and that it's assymetry is correct for where you drive. IE RHD != LHD.
