My wife had several Volvos before we got married but not since and Im a Ford Superduty diesel guy. She wants another Volvo and Ive looked at the 240 series because everyone tells me those 4 bangers go for hundreds of thousands of miles. How long were those great little engines used and in what models? Ive seen some newer sharp 740s for cheap but dont know anything about them. Did they use the same engine? And turbo---people told me to stay away from turbo for longevity reasons. So, from 82 to 89, any years to stay away from? And then for the 740s, are they as reliable and the same question, from whenever they started to about 1996, anything to stay away from? I know this is trying to condense your entire website into one thread but I have 6 cars to see within the next 3 days. Thanks, Marvin

I would go with a 89-93 240 for these reasons:
- improved wiring harness
- updated AC is easier to convert to R134
- abs brakes
- driver air bag!

The early 740 uses the same b230f non-interface engine and has better rust protection but lacks the classic style the makes the 240 unique.

And yes the engines last for ever when maintained.

In 240s 4 cylinder engines were used from 1976-1993. The 1976 had a push-rod overhead valve engine while from 1977-1993 overhead cam b21/b23/b230 engines were used on 242, 244, 245, DL, GL and 240 models. Non-turbo 740s use the same engines. 760s used a variety of engines, V6, B230FT (turbo).
In their standard form there are no real "Bad years" for 240s but basically the newer the better as far as reliability. The early ones tend to rust especially where salt is used on the roads.
240 Turbos aren't too bad but early 740 turbos had weak con-rods and are less reliable that the 1990-1992 740 turbos and the 1991-1994 940 turbos. 740s are cheaper because there is less demand for them - they lack the 240's retro-cool look. Later 740s had Regina fuel injection which is more expensive to fix than the Bosch LH system.
