Just purchased our XC90 after the lease expired. Its an '04 2.5T 31K miles and other than the fuel pump mount cracking hasnt had any issues at all. In fact the tires ( Michelin ) are just fine and original. Very happy with the car.

We drive about 9K a year. Extended waranties only go up to 7 years so as of August '08 we'll be out of the original warranty at about 40K miles. It seems to make the most sense to get a 7 year / 75K warranty from Volvo but at $2316 w/ $ 100 deductible in USD seems like a lot for what will be a three year warranty . Historically though this engine / transmission seem to have a real good track record and I hate to waste money.

I havent looked into third party warranties and dont want a third party quite frankly.

Any and all thoughts from the group would be greatly appreciated. It also seems that all the Volvo dealers have the exact same price as well.

Most people will say just keep up with maintenance as opposed to spending all that $$ up front.

Thanks. From everything I've read the T and transmission seem to be a relaible drive train. Given that we already have a motor club thing on our AMEX card it seems like $ 772 / year plus a deductible is a pretty steep bet over and above normal maintenance

the extension is a real life saver if you are not going to be upkeeping the Volvo on schedule. They are pretty reliable, but if you are beating on it or lettin yourself get lax on the maintenance, get the warranty. Better to spend it up front than to have to shell it out later at a premium.

I bought one for my 2004 2.5T. Bought complete care through Zurich....3rd party - but the best out there. It pays for rental while yours is in the shop ...also emergency care in case of break down - will put you up in hotel on trips while repair takes place. It is the closest to bumper to bumper...not just engine and tranny. I have never bought extended warranty on anything, but after looking long and hard (plenty of DD) the xc90 needs it. I love the car....but reliability is an issue with the xc90. I have a local mom and pop volvo service guy who works on my 94 940.....he has nothing to gain......he said definitly buy it....I did.

My recommendation: Buy the extended warranty

The Volvo XC90 is an amazing vehicle, which is why we all bought it. I could go on and on about all the reasons I like it, however, it is a very complex vehicle. Most of the reasons I like the car so much are the reasons I bought the extended warranty. The average car has 14,000 moving parts, so even if it is 99.9% perfect there is still 14 things wrong with it. The XC90 is much more than an average car with many more parts. It would be too bad if something went wrong and you had to pay to fix it and that one bad experience ruined the years of pleasure you got from this car.

Definitely get an EWP!!!!!! The one I chose is through Capitol One Bank. It's for 4 years or 60K miles and cost me $2,100 w/100 Ded. The XC90 is prone to kinks. In fact, I had to replace my transmission last month and my car only had 56K miles. The new tranmission cost $3,200, but the EWP paid $2,910 of the costs.
