Greetings everyone!

Glad I found you guys. Hopefully you'll give me a chance to pick a few of the site's "expert" brains!

A little history about me:

Name is Chris, I'm 23 years old, Hailing from rainy (currently sunny!) Portland Oregon. The volvo in discussion is actually my Girlfriend's. Its a 1982 244 DL. As far as I can tell its the stock B21F in the car. 3 speed Automatic. Engine has about 280K miles on it, and I don't know the service history of it.

I'm mostly a GM guy, but I've always loved the boxy lines of the 2 series volvos. I also Love the reliability of these cars, the performance potential, and the ease of service on them (at least so far!)

anyway, down to business..

The car is having some trouble running, It will start up and Idle fine around 900rpm, for all of about 20-30 seconds, but then starts stumbling bucking eventually will stall. Does it regardless of weither or not its in gear or not. opening the throttle seems to kill it nearly instantly. I've checked the the Throttle body, and it seems to open/close ok. pulled each wire to the injectors individually. it seems to cause a stumble for the short time it Idles, but it still dies in the same amount of time. I've pulled the wire to the "air mass sensor" on the intake tube. Same result. Checked the resistance on the wires, within spec. Checked the open and operating voltage on the coil, its also within spec. I have not checked the timing, but I've pulled all the spark plugs and they're all carbon fouled very badly, which to me is indicitive of a rich running condition.

I cleaned the plugs and reinstalled them. Car idled for about 2 minutes before it died then.

Basically where should I start first? Timing could be an issue. How do I check that? There's no vaccum pod on the distributor, should I assume the ECU controls the timing curve? If its something on the air metering side, how do I check the "air mass sensor" on the intake hose to make sure its working properly?

I know this seems like a lot at once, but really any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Yes it sounds like a rich running condition, do you smell gas in the oil (on the dipstick)?

Some random thoughts:
1. always start out with a basic tune-up - BOSCH copper plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and air filter if possible
2. make sure your air passage isn't blocked
3. The engine has two temp senders, one for the gauge and one for the ECU. If the ECU one is defective or the wiring is no good it might think the enigine is always cold, adding fuel.
4. possible bad O2 sensor - with it plugged in the voltage output should vary between ~ .2v to .8v.
5. Bad fuel pressure regulator. Smell for gas in the vacuum line between it and the intake.

It appears that two of the injectors aren't even spraying, just dribbling fuel, even with the key in the "on" position.

There's an All Volvo shop down by me, so I went down and picked one of the mechanic's brain's.

He reccomended I replace the two faulty ones and the Fuel pressure regulator.

So...yeah, whoever deisgned the LH-Jettronic Fuel injection on the B21F....uh....yeah, not so smart design. It seems the only way to remove the injectors from the rail is to cut the little braided rubber fuel line and carefully cut the little collars with a pair of Dykes and peel em off.

I snagged a B23 manifold and fuel rail from the Boneyard....and it would probably work, if it weren't for the Throttle body itself. If I used the B21 Throttle Body the leverage on the spring changes and so I'd have to fab a bracket up to make it work.

Anyone know a company or Part Number for the B21F injectors? I've Been to Shucks (Checker/Kragen), NAPA, Autozone, and a few local parts houses. All of them have the B23 injectors, but don't even sell or have a PN for the B21's.

I'm really trying to avoid the Stealership, but I might not have a choice.

Help.

Robert240:

Those injectors to the link you gave me look like B23 Injectors.

The other site Ryan 20 gave me has those injectors For super cheap, even if I have to pay the $10 core charge.

I might go that route.

Thanks for the information guys!
