Hi I'm new here.

I had a problem today on my 2004 S40.

When I put the key in, the car wouldn't start and I got a "Key Error" message.

The problem has now went away, but will it come back?
Is there a quick fix, my warranty expired 1 1/2 months ago!!!

Any help would be most welcome

This has happened several times to me. I was once stranded for a half hour until the key decided to work. Put in a new car battery. It worked for me. My car battery died shortly after having key errors. After replacing it, never had the problem again. Note, when you replace the car battery, the Volvo replacement does not perfectly fit. You have to bend the battery hold down, it's a bit of work, but not too difficult. Vise grips worked for me. Good luck.

its the ignition module and volvo know about this problem, mine was 2 month out of warrantee, mine wouldnt run and the wheels were on full lock, when the AA came to tow he took the weight off the front wheels and it started working again, volvo replaced a total cost to me of £230 approx

Could be the part the key goes into (start contol unit) or the steering lock (steering lock module). Most likly will be the start control unit.
