hello volvo owners everywhere.

after owning 2 white 240 estates (which i couldn't afford to run), and then a diesel renault (which was economic, but wasn't very comfortable), i really wanted to get my hands on a diesel volvo. i drove back from the auctions with a 96 460 1.9 TD that looks and drives lovely.

thing is: there's a loud whirring noise coming from somewhere. it becomes apparent at about 25 mph, and gradually rises in pitch according to the speed i'm travelling. no change if i declutch or change gears, so i thought it might be wheel bearings.

i took it to a garage for a service and told them about the noise, saying i thought it was wheel bearings or transmission. they serviced everyhting, took it out a few times and said: "ooh, it is a loud noise, probably wheel bearings or transmission, that'll be £100 please."

they did a thorough check on wheel bearings and pronounced them in good condition, no play anywhere. which leads me to think that its the gearbox/driveshaft or something like that.

anybody got any advice?
