I just picked up a new 2008 XC90. The car has an AUX input in the center console for an iPod or USB player. I can't seem to locate the the part number or price for the adapter. Does this have to be a volvo part or can I use a 3rd pary cable? Any links to purchase are helpful.

This is from the volvo website:

iPodŽ Music Interface
Getting the best out of your car audio system, iPodŽ connector provides seamless integration of your iPodŽ. Simply connect your device to the connector hidden under the front center armrest and leave it there out of harms way. Playlists, songs and artists are displayed in the console menu, and you can select your music via the audio controls or steering wheel integrated controls. You can also select different random and shuffle modes. And when reaching your destination, simply unplug and take your portable device with you.

Available as an accessory. MSRP Price shown does not include installation.

Do I need installation if it is just an AUX cable?

Thank you!

All you need is a mini-jack to mini-jack which is available almost anywhere now, Wal-mart or any electronics store....and sounds great in the XC-90 with an ipod.

To get all the functions that volvo are advertising you would need to get the volvo kit which involves fitting a control unit (AUU) that must be installed into your car with software via volvo diagnostic equipment. There is possibly good kit availible that will be cheaper and good value but will not work with the car controls.

I understood (or so my dealer told me) the XC90's no longer have a USB compatible iPod connection - couldn't keep up with all the releases and discon'd the unit (which I can't even find info on anywhere).

The AUX mini-jack is just that, one that transmits sound to your car stereo instead of to headphones. Ergo no visible car system display of iPod track info etc. "Playlists, songs and artists are displayed in the console menu, and you can select your music via the audio controls or steering wheel integrated controls." would not be available with an AUX.

If 'raydar' can confirm details of the (AUU) unit I'd love to know what's available for after market USB connection, which theoretically would provide the console / audio controls and steering wheel integration.

The Volvo adapter is shown online all over the place. Try this link

Geon information sounds correct. The aux in is just that a way to hard wire the sound from a different music source. You must use the click wheel to control the Ipod. Menardxc just needs a mini jack adapter. I see the docking station verson on Ebay for about 9 bucks. Probably very similar in operation to the Volvo one, just about 100 dollars less. So if you think the Volvo adapter will display the info on your factory control panel it's not gonna happen. At least you don't have to use an FM modulator.

The volvo kit will show the ipod song/album details on the factory fit screen! It will also let you browse/skip songs via the steering controls. As I said the 2008 model ipod kit (not just the simple aux cable connection) will have a lot more functionality. ipod and usb option is also available, I have fitted a few. this is true for the UK cannot say if USA has this option but I would be very suprised if it did not.

From volvocars uk website

Getting the best out of your car audio system, the iPodŽ/USB connector provides seamless integration of your iPodŽ, a USB music player, or both at the same time. Simply connect your device to the connector hidden under the front centre armrest and leave it there out of harms way. Playlists, songs and artists are displayed in the console menu, and you can select your music via the audio controls or steering wheel integrated controls. You can also select different random and shuffle modes. And when reaching your destination, simply unplug and take your portable device with you. Available in the autumn of 2007.

Wont be cheap though.

I have a2008 XC90. My son gave me a cord to plug into the aux outlet and into the little ipod shuffle I have. (Yeah I know, it's no Nano, but I'm a late starter with this stuff!) Two questions, does a Shuffle work in the car, and two all my Volvo stuff refers to MP3, not MP4. Does it not read the MP4 music?

I'm just not willing to go into another Best Buy or Circuit City and have a late teen early 20 saleperson speak to me with words and technology terms I cannot begin to understand. Too embarrassing!

Thanks for any help.
