Hi there,

I got this annoying oil leak that comes from the front of the engine and I can't see where it's coming from. I changed the dipstick a few months ago and the oil seems to be coming from under the head gasket portion. So I dont think the vavle cover gasket is the culprit. I did not remove the intake manifold, so at this point I'm suspecting the head gasket, but the engine does'nt burn coolant.

What do you think? The engine has 270 000 km. What's behind the intake manifold? Any oil lines in that area. Oh, it's non turbo by the way.

Thanks for any input.

Could have just came with age. My remedy would be thicker oil.

I think I'm beyound that remedy. The leak is so important that some serious smoke is billowing through the hood when I stop the car at a red light. It's really embarassing, and I would like to keep the car for a little while still.

hi

is there any oil on the bottom of the dip stick,if so with the engine running lift the dip stick if there is a mist puffing from there you have a problem with the oil trap and breater pipes, flames trap ie the engine is not breathing which is pushing the pressure back,,

also is there any oil around the oil cap, that will be down to the seal worn replace that,

the oil cap and dipstick tube are bone dry. I could try changing the flame trap though as it's been a few months since it was changed.

Is there some cutaway diagram that shows the engine? I would want to know what's behind the intake manifold.

Yes, there is a lot of oil related stuff under the intake manifold. I have an 850 1996 turbo although the oil trap and PVC assembly is different it is still under the intake manifold in all the 850 engine as far as I know. There are numerous places that could leak oil in this system. There is a write up at the eBay site of FCP Groton:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Volvo-850-C...3254QQtcZphoto:

Which gives and explanation of what is in the oil trap breather system. Also if you search forums for oil trap breather 850 Volvo you should fine additional information.

Good luck!

It could very well be a clogged oil-trap.
