I had this problem like this. The fuel pump relay went wrong. It can be an cunning problem. This relay there is behind the glove compartment. There are two relay, one is the oxygen sensor relay, the ather is the fuel pump relay. Ask a mechanic to test it.

The fuel pump relay was the first thing the "volvo experts" replaced. It made absolutely no difference to the problems being experienced.

The same 'volvo experts' didn't change the fuel filter at the same time. They didn't check the leads or plugs. (Which were also crappy and were casuing a slight misfire on one cylinder)

Anyway, the Swedish beastie has been behaving itself (fingers crossed, touch wood etc) since the last trip to the auto electrician.

So for the benefit of those who migh have similar problems.
1. Cranks over but won't start --- Crank shaft position sensor problem (can't sense the turning, so doesn't supply spark)

2. Shudder and stall whilst warm idling in gear --- idle air control valve failure (can also be lambda sensor failure, but not in my case)

3. Fuel pump relays problems are more likely to affect engine under load. So if it stalls whilst hammering along, that might be the problem.

The moral of my story - never trust a mechanic that trust a computer to diagnose a fault. :amen:

1994 440 1.8i SE Manual - recently developed a very similar problem but when cold (especially in damp wheather).

It will start fine and drive off without a problem but when I stop at the first set of traffic lights (about 100 yards down the road), it stalls under load. It will start again without a problem (idle slighty higher than normal) but you have to rev it up and slowly slip the clutch in order to get anywhere.

Anybody? Any ideas? Maybe the same fault(s)?

Sounds the same - have the idle air intake control valve checked out. In my research apparently the oxygen sensor can also be a contributor.

Good luck - mine has been behaving since the last trip to the auto electrician.
