Hi:

The stock AM/FM cassette radio in my '93 240 works fine in AM, when I switch to FM the sound is very low and garbled. Actually, you have to turn the volume up all of the way to hear it. Can anyone suggest what's wrong? Do I have to replace both the radio and the amplifier?

Thanks,
Ed

Hi there,

I have just bought an '88 240 with the same problem. I'll let you know if I find a solution.

I'd still be interested in hearing from others who have (and maybe have solved) this problem.

few things to check.

the antenna lead on the back of the headunit to see if its inserted properly

the lead where it travels around the car by the bottom of the doors for scuffs kinks (broken wires internally)

and also where it joins at the antenna itself, corrosion on the terminals on the joins can degrade conductivity

also the antenna itself.

failing this, it could be a fault with the hu itself, if you can try another hu with the antenna. if its the same result then i would say try to replace the cable, antenna and possibly purchase a booster, i think maplins (uk) do these, but stores like radio shack or radio spares, farnell etc..

failing all that my knowledge has expired now

Matt
