Pull the lever down, and leave it there, you can then move the steering column in an up and down direction. the bonnet catch is on the left side of the car down near your feet.

You shouldn't feel bad about it. I have an equally brainless story.

When I first got my Volvo it had a full tank of petrol, but a week later I needed to fill it up.
I spent 20 minutes at the petrol station, first looking for the fuel cap release next to the seat, under the dash, under the seat; searched through the owner's manual, frustrated that they didn't list something so important in the index...
until I got out, walked to the side of the car and saw that all I needed to do was open it WITH MY HAND!

I've had Japanese cars for so long, I forgot that not all cars open the fuel cap from inside the car
