Does anyone know if I can adjust my brake pedal height on my 82 244 GL? I read an article somewhere that the brake pedal should be even (in height off the floor) with the clutch pedal. My pedal is now about 1 to 1-1/2 " below the clutch pedal at rest. Pedal free play (until I feel resistance) is about 3/4" pushing the pedal down just with my finger.

The only adjustment I can see under the dash is the turnbuckle that has a rod with washers and cotter pin to hold assembly together. It is directly in front (firewall side) of the brake light switch.

Is this just for the booster/master cylinder push rod adjustment or can I adjust the pedal here also without messing up the master push rod length/travel?

Stumped..

Do your brakes and brake lights work ? Why do you think or know that it needs adjustment ?

Ryan 20,

Thanks for replying. It just seems like the pedal travel has increased quite a bit over time and I was concerned about it. I just wondered if I could shorten up the pedal travel a bit so I have a hard pedal halfway down instead a couple inches off the floor..

Brakes are all new, calipers, master, rotors within specs.,(run out and thickness) all bled in correct order, twice (no air present), master was bench bled, master is new not reman., new brake junction and 2 new rear proportioning valves. No air in new rear prop valves..had to tap them a bit to get it all out but all seems OK now..

Still interested in decreasing the pedal travel if someone knows how, or if it is even possible to do on the older 244's or not?

:haha:

This problem is occurring under no boost, just mechanical pressure from my foot car not running.

How could the brake booster cause this if this engine isn't running while it happens? Is there something mechanical that can go wrong in the booster to cause all this pedal travel to the floor?

If there is I've never heard of it. I thought the only time the booster is giving you a problem is when you run out of assist while the car is running and the brakes require more pressure from your foot to get any brakes at all.

If you know or have heard of another way the booster could be causing this issue it's new to me and I would appreciate any help or ideas you may have...

Tonight I worked on it again..bled the system again in the correct order..no visible air in the bleeder hose at all during bleeding. I am pressure bleeding through the top of the master to avoid vacuum sucking air back in through the bleeder valves by pedal method. It works really well.

I just can't seem to get a good pedal without long travel to the floor.

Ryan it almost feels like the master or something else is leaking by itself.

The other reason I say that is because there are absolutely no visible leaks (of fluid) anywhere that I can see. I even went as far as placing 11" X 14" copy paper under every connection on the car including under each caliper to make sure the pistons weren't leaking either.. I then pump the pedal several times and leave it over night. I come back in the morning or even the next evening, no leaks anywhere, not one drop...go figure...

This is the second master I put in since all this started. The first was a reman. and I thought it was bad because it was doing the same thing it is still doing with the brand new master I just put in..I'm getting pretty frustrated at this point..I have never encountered a brake problem like this during my 25 years of working on any vehicle including Volvos.. The other suspect on my mind could be air leaking somewhere and not fluid..How do I check for that other than spraying each and every connection with soapy water and look at them while someone pumps the brakes?? I don't know if that would even detect it? If any of the caliper pistons or cylinders have a big scratch in them air could also be getting by there and I wouldn't really know it..

Quite a bit to digest, I know... Hey, at least it's not your car..LOL....

I isolated each wheel to test also. It seems like the more wheels (calipers) that become active the farther the pedal goes to the floor. With one caliper connected the pedal was hard about 3" off the floor. With 2 connected hard at about 2-1/2" off the floor. With three connected hard about 2" to 1-1/2" off the floor. With all four connected it goes right to the floor. I already tested the fourth caliper by itself thinking that may be the problem but it's fine alone by itself, hard pedal at 3" off the floor under no boost. All others were tested the same way -no boost. Don't forget, I also measured all caliper thicknesses and they are well within specs. only .017 under brand new OEM specs.

It seems like the more calipers that are connected the master can't keep up with the additional need to adequately pressurize them all...I'm running out of theories here as you can tell... it's like I need more pedal travel but don't have it to give.

Thanks,
