We have had this car for less than a year and my key fob is about to break at the base from twisting in the ignition.

Does anyone know what it should approximately cost to get a new key fob complete with coding for my car?

This may sound odd, but, ss there some kind of cap that can be put on the fob to better protect it from the elements, being in your pocket, etc?

 Think you'll probably have to go to the dealer so the key and alarmfob can be programed into your cars computer....Not cheap....I had my Volvo at a non-volvo dealer for some work last year., they lost the alarm fob and key...They had to tow the car to the local dealer for replacement, cost $260.00...., so, again, not cheap....

PS.Don't understand what the problem is with your key wearing out or the fob..???

I have seen late-model S40 keys on eBay. I guess recovered from totaled cars? Anyway, you'd definitely need a dealer to program one, but they might be cheaper.

BTW, the car keeps track of how many keys there are to it. I think the maximum is nine. I remember finding this information by playing with the settings on the console.

The remote still works. The part that goes into the ignition broke off today. I can still start the car. I just have to jam the "key part" into the "remote part" to be able to twist it in the ignition. Guess I should have splurged the extra $450 and gotten the push button ignition.

Maybe I should ask the dealer if that can be installed? I'm thinking that if one key can fall apart in one year...sheesh.

I purchased a Volvo recently from a BMW dealership and the car only had one key. So I went online and purchased one from eBay. The Volvo dealership will/can not program a new key without a special bar code that comes from the factory. Oh, and the cost of purchasing a new key from the dealership was going to cost $350 or higher!

Interesting. I'm also in San Antonio and I purchased my S40 used at a non-Volvo dealer here in town (North Park LM). The car only had one key, but I negotiated the a second key as part of the deal. My understanding was that a second key would indeed cost me over $300 as well, and I wanted the seller to pay - not me. However, once all the papers were signed and the S40 was mine, the salesman told me the cost of the 2nd key was more like $150 to them. Since there is only one Volvo dealer in town, I'm sure we are talking about the same place. I wonder if the two dealerships (North Park and the Volvo Center) worked out a dealer to dealer discounted price on the key? In other words, I wonder if there is some way to get a discounted key by involving the help of the BMW Center where you bought your Volvo? Just a thought.

I thought the key would be covered under the warranty if it is less than one year old.
