The HU-615 radio in my 2001 S40 is starting to have problems with the display. Intermittently, when listening in FM mode, the display goes blank or partially blank or shows random characters. When this happens, there's no way to tell what frequency you're on, or to locate a new frequency.

I assume that something like this would cost more to repair (if it's repairable at all) than the cost of a replacement unit. If anyone has any suggestions about a possible fix, that would be great, but absent that, I'm going to look at replacing this unit.

A little searching on eBay turned up a couple of used HU-615 units in the $200 - $250 range, and the sellers indicate that the radios are basically plug-and-play -- just plug it in, set the code, and you're off and running.

Is it really that easy? I'm a non-mechanical type, and don't want to damage anything by trying to repair something that I should have left to a professional.

Tom

It's that easy. Decide if you want an after market or factory radio. A 615 is the same as any other 615 so a swap, plug in, code is all that's needed. After market you will need an installation kit and a wire harness adapter, and possibly an antennae adapter(usually 2 adapters for European cars, powered one for better AM reception). If you don't think you can handle it just pay someone.

PS. Just curious, what type of damage do you think you could cause by changing the radio?
