Hello,
I am a new member from Athens Greece, and I currently consider buying a new V50 (MY08). As you may know, in Europe there is a vast choice of petrol engines for the V50 (1.6 (100hp), 1.8 (125 hp), 2.0 (145 hp), 2.4 (170 hp), T5 and T5 awd). Naturally, the price range is also vast. In Greece no Volvo diesels are imported and the most "popular" engine version is the 1.8 one. Also, the only version you can test drive.

Since I cannot go for the T5 version, but test drove the 1.8 that seemed to struggle for a bit more torque and power (especially if the car is loaded I guess), I would like to know from other members that may have drove both, how the 2.0 engine compares to the 1.8 in terms of performance? Do they use the same gear ratios? Theoretically there is a 1sec difference in acceleration and a 10km/h more of top speed for the 2.0 model. But at the end of the day, does it worth the extra money (and extra taxes you have to pay) for getting a more adequate performance for the weight of the car? Volvo dealers say no, too little difference in performance for the money you pay (2000 Eur more for purchase, plus 200 Eur more annual taxes for the 2.0 with respect to the 1.8).
Thanks to all in advance.

The petrol engnes in the V50 are somewhat primitive, guzzling a lot of gas but not having much torque for what they are - 1.8 and 2.0 in particular. and the pollute a lot too.

If you want pulling power you are better off getting the Diesel 2.0 litre engine.

Unfortunately in Greece Volvo diesels are not imported, so I don't have this alternative.

But, I have managed to test drive the 2.0 petrol and found it much more adequate than the 1.8, for the weight of the car. And, that's it, I have ordered one! I am expecting delivery in early January 2008.

I am currently wondering about purchasing and installing the rear roof spoiler for a more sporty look, but I am hesitating because holes have to be drilled on the car for installation.

I got the 2.4i - its surprisingly powerful for 170HP - good power at High RPM's - i live in texas where there are no mountains, no hills - so i cant say how it acts on terrain... but for highway overpasses and off the line at stop lights my 5 geartronic auto does just fine...

gas mileage so far ~25mpg

In Malaysia, we have no choice but to get the V50T5 FWD. However, the car price in Malaysia is extremely expensive due to import duty impose by the Government.

V50T5 selling for USD60,000.....

we have the 1.6 diesel, it doesn't sound like much but honestly it does have more than enough acceleration, plenty of torque aswell.
