Hey how's it going,. I have been considering purchasing a 2006 S40 2.4i and have a few questions.

Mainly, what are the common problems with these cars? I am going from an old 1960 chevy truck to this, so I kind of have no clue what I am getting myself into.

Also, I am planning on buying this through a private seller and I was curious about the warranty. The seller lists that the car has the 6 year, 100k mile warranty and I was wondering if this was a factory warranty that was purchased and if it will carry over though a change in ownership.

Thanks.

that is a big jump.....basically there is just a few things that you can do by yourself on this cars (as with any other of the today’s cars), compared with an 1960 truck, but you will love the difference in driving and comfort, get ready to add a budget for repairs and services.

Most of the problems that are common with the S40 can be fixed with software updates. Things like the stereo freezing up, erratic climate control etc. There are some people on another forum talking about problems with clogged PCV valves, and vibrations. Some people (myself included) have also had problems with the alarm system. I really haven't heard of any major common problems though.

As for the extended warranty, just ask the seller if you can read the documentation to make sure that it is transferable.

Yes the S40 is a great car; i love mine too. But it does have problems. Mine had the PCV valve problem (was fixed during my second service) and the other is the trunk. Though not technically a "problem"; the AWD S40 looses vertical trunk space (about 2-3 inches) over non-AWD models. My dealer neglected to tell me and i was very "peeved". Also not technically a problem was the home delivery. I bought mine in Spangdahlem Germany & Mitch (the dealer) told me home delivery would be free with my voucher but when i went to ship it home a year later they tried to charge me 200 Euro to send it to port. Again, not necessarily a car problem but buyer beware.

I bought a S40 with manual trans and standard engine a couple of weeks ago. It is a 2006 with 18,000 miles and came with a 50,000 mile warranty and 4 years. When I first bought car it had a gas leak so dealer (non Volvo) replaced gas line and fuel pump. Volvo has had several recalls for fairly minor problems. I just took it to dealer because of faulty power window switch which they are replacing wiring harness in driver's side door. Manual trans sounded a little loud to me so they checked it out and found bad bearing in transmission so they are also replacing transmission. The good news is that everything is covered by warranty and they (Volvo dealer) has given me a great loaner for entire time. The bad news is that I wonder about the engineering and design of this car which I do really like. I have had Toyotas lately with no problems.

I now have 20,000 miles on my 2006 S40 2.4i It has been reliable thus far with only a few problems.

Initially my alternator idler pulley was bad and made a terrible noise at strat up until it warmed up. (Repaired under warranty)

Next, I pressed the key buton to lock my doors one evening and the stupid alarm went off and would not stop no matter what I tried. The computer finally cycled it off after about 15 minutes of noise. I was afraid to touch it once it stopped. The next morning when I started it again I received a message that read "alarm system service required". My alarm module was replaced with a new one. Apparently this has been a common problem.

Third, common complaint of flakey air vent noise inside the car (sounds like a low volume barking dog) I have received a bulletin about a possible fix for this but I don't know.

Recently a small light / indicator fell out from underneath my driver's side mirror. I have no idea how this happened and the small piece that keeps it in place no longer locks properly. This will have to be repaired under warranty.

I purchased the few necessary tools and change my own oil which is really no big deal. I can't reset the "regular maintenance required" light but all you have to do is press a button and it goes away until you start the car again.

I'm afraid of the electronics in this car and I'm not sure what the long-term problems might be but I love driving the car and hope that it will not give me many problems. Right now I can only cross my fingers and wait.

The new 2008 2 door Honda Accord is very appealing right now!!!!!! Just when I think about trading my S40 I see it sitting in the parking lot and fall in love with the design all over again.
