Hello, I have 2004.5 S40 and I bought a sound system for it ( two 12'' subs and 1200 watt amp) I took it to best buy to get it installed and they said they cannot install it because the radio is digital and the line output converters cannot convert digital into analog to make it work. Is this true? Can you put a sound system in it?

Thanks!

you can install it. I bought an aftermarket sub and amp and Best Buy installed it for $175. You need a hi-low signal converter which they carry. IMO they are just being lazy asses.

Do I need the JL Audio Clean Sweep? to make this work? Or does that do a completely different thing.

By choosing the hi-low signal converter method you will need to draw a signal from one of the speakers in the doors (at this point the signal changes from digital to analog), there is some pros/cons on this, but one of the pros it’s a very inexpensive solution as our cars don’t have an aux output.
You already invest some money on this sound equipment, so use the hi-low signal converter and if you don’t like it you can search for a better (and more expensive) method such JL Audio Clean Sweep.
For me you have chosen the best way to add bass freq. to your sound, maybe a little bit too much power for me, but its good.
Factory sub is quite expensive, Its an 8" woofer that has no freq. range! Its the same as the speakers in the door with a little more power. and on the top of that the way its made to be installed will reduce space in your trunk by raising the floor. The pros is that you get a clean OEM installation.
Your will also lose space in your trunk by installing what you already got, but for me it makes more sense to lose depth rather than height, and the installers will always have more choices/places.
By the way, its a do it yourself installation for some people, you need only the basics, but if you decide to go with an installer, they shouldnt charge you too much.

Thanks Roco! Can you recommend a good High-Low converter for me? Another thing I like about the JL Audio Clean Sweep is the fact that I can play my Ipod without a freaking FM transmitter!

You have some options:

- install the original power supply, power amplifier and subwoofer. Everything cost about 600 usd.

- connect your rear or door speakers to a converter. the converter can be connected to your power amplifier and subwoofer

- connect your year or door speakers to your power amplifier if the amplifier have a high input connectors

in regards to the ipod, the only choice for 2006 s40 is

- fm transmiter
- fm modulator

both have bad quality....

I will check soon the circuitry to check if I can add an aux input with the scan button in the front pannel. I'm at this time generating a diagram of the car electronics...

bh1234, Not really, search around for High-Low converters on this forum or on the swedespeed.com forum for comments, there is plenty on trends regarding this.

To connect your ipod and get a better audio quality you can use a FM Modulator instead of an FM transmitter, or get a true aux input by the JL Audio Clean Sweep method, there is also plenty on trends regarding this with pros/cons on each methods, just search around and make your own decision considering the city where you live, your budget, etc.
