A couple of days ago while driving my 2005 V50 volvo on the motorway (wife & two kids plus a fifth passenger also riding) the vehicle lost its speed almost completely without warning and the engine stalled. A few seconds later the car following us (average speed of 100kms) hit us hard. It was quite a nusty shake, thank god we are ok.

Took the car to the locall dealer, he said no such precedent exists in Cyprus, they will check it out and let me know their version of the failure.

Any feedback on this? I read that similar incidents occured in the past in the US and UK.

Glad to hear that everyone involved is alright. The only V50 issue I would be concerned with is your own. If I was in your situation I would certainly be contacting my lawyer, cause I know what the dealership is going to say. They know nothing, and have not a heard a thing about ANY other V50's experiencing the same problem. Good luck, hope everything works out in the end.

Hi George A, I had a similar experience in my 2005 V50 D2.0 this summer. I was driving alone at 75mph on motorway in England (on cruise control) when suddenly the rev counter fell and pulsated around 1500rpm and all power lost. I quickly switched off cruise, but had no power in the accelerator at all. I then negotiated 3 lanes of Friday evening traffic to get to the hard shoulder (not nice!) At this point, I put the engine out of its misery.

I attempted to re-start several times and, after 5 attempts, it kicked into life with ENGINE SERVICE message. It was then fine for next 5 weeks, and has just started doing it again at low speeds (decelerating round a bend, pulling away with low revs.) Each time, I sit in the middle of the road, warning lights on, with the engine unable to rise above 1000 rpm. Usually it clears in 3-4 mins.

I am about to have it looked at in Volvo dealership - but I am concerned that a solution will not be found, based on others' experience. If so, I will sell it as the motorway experience I do not want to repeat!

If anyone knows of the REAL solution, please post!

I'm currently a V50 2.4 owner. I had an experience in my previous A4 Avant 1.8t while traveling on FWY entering a tunnel in Taiwan. My car lost rpm all of sudden while rpm will not respond to accelerator inputs, so I pulled to the side after exiting tunnel. The dealer later found it was the loosening of air intake duct, causing loss of pressure and therefore engine cannot function properly. I suggest to have dealer do a checkup, or recheck all intake air duct screws for its tightness. Hope this helps.

I have now had my V50 tested for the intermittant power/rev loss. The dealership did the right thing: they test drove the car, induced the fault and then plugged the engine into the (Vidas??) computer back at base. The fault: EGV failure.....Exhaust Gas Valve. This was duly replaced and it runs like a dream!

Hi.

My wife has a 2005 V50 Diesel. She has had two problems seperated by 8 weeks.

Cruising along fine, then slowing down to approx 15 mph in traffic and then very rough running and loss of torque.

In neutral the engine would rev high but roughly, but difficult to drive. Once over 2000 rpm it seemed better.

I tought maybe it was fuel starvation, but reading this thread may be its not.

We have had no engine lights. Have you?

Most likly a sticking EGR valve, if it turns out to be that volvo may pay part of the repair even if you out of warranty.
