Hi,
I just bought a 2001 T5, first don't think about buying one - BUY ONE.
Best car I've ever owned and I'm a car nut, I've had Alfa's, Jags, MR2 Turbo and currently a 3 litre BMW convertible.

In my opinion nothing touches it for performance, comfort, equipment, at this price. Similar BMW or Audi would be double the price. Rare cars so no one knows what it is.

I can't tell you how many times I've had some kid pull up at the lights thinking he would burn off grandad in the Volvo, only to have a " what the f*** was that " look on his face, priceless.

Make sure you have good tyres as you will need all the grip you can get, I just binned my Pirelli P6000's with 3mm of tread in favour of Eagle F1's much improved.

Now to answer your tuning question, being a turbo it's easily tuned. BSR make a PPC giving another 50 bhp sold by Parts for Volvos and Elkparts. Rica do one offering 60 bhp, that's 310bhp in a front wheel drive!

Rica link below.

I should say that I recently bought a BSR PPC to tune myself and had a nightmare, see my Tuners Beware post on this forum.

That said if it works and I'm sure many people have had a positive experience then good luck. One word of advice, if you do decide to tune have it done at a tuning centre don't try the do it yourself method, it nearly killed my ECU.

I also fitted a Jetex air filter which helps it breath and exhausts are also available.

Try the car standard 1st though, they are quick in standard form.

Personally, I'd pass on any 2001.

Also try Elkparts and Partsforvolvos in the UK who ship world wide.

As per earlier post I'm not aware of any transmission problems, lots of S60's in the UK with 150,000 plus miles on them. The police used them extensively and are renowned for their reliability, many ex plod cars find 2nd homes and last for years with over 200K miles.

These cars have a reputation for being bombproof, part of what attracted me to them, with the T5 that's cake and eat it.

Kipper,

There are loads of known tranny issues w/ the Automatics in the 2001 model year. I linked to a more detailed description in a post further up in this thread.

Whoops hope mine's a good un!

Have to say I read a great deal before buying this car and none of the JD Power, What car surveys mention transmission faults, just hope I don't encounter any probs.

The S60 does have an enviable rep for reliability overall, having owned Alfas, Jags and French cars that are rubbish in this area it's important to me. Doesn't matter how good your car is if it won't start it's no better than walking.

As my firend says "2nd class motoring is better than 1st class walking" Amen.
