I am still reading through most of the stereo stuff (besides the mehanical) and have a question to ask about aftermarket headunits. From what I understand these cars T6) are networked so everything talks with everything. If I were to remove the OEM HU (which I have seen as being very easy to do - thanks poopbunny) then could I just install let's say something like a Kenwood 6.5" DIN screen like you would do on a less integrated car? Understandably the switches on the steering wheel for volume and channel changing would no longer work.

If I can't, darn. Regarding the IPOD business does it actually display the song title on the stereo unit? I assume it does given that the adapter will probably take care of this anyway.

Thanks :57:

Anyone done this before??

If it's been done before, would a 6.5" or a 7" screen be better?

Not sure why you would want an aftermarket head unit. I was looking into it for another car and I thought it actually sounded worse than the Volvo OEM. The Volvo Stereo with Dolby Pro Logic really sets the bar here. And I guess the Pro Logic II on the 2nd Gen S80 would be even better. If you really want a display, go for an aftermarket Ipod adapter as the OEM version does not display any title info. Not sure if your car would start if you replaced the head unit without some serious tinkering with jumpering / bypassing some of the circuits at the back.

Didn't know about whether the car would start or not by replacing the Headunit. Something similar to what the Toyota / Lexus Soarers had with their EMV screens. Okay so aftermarket ipod adapter it's going to have to be if it can't be done.

Reason for an aftermarket HU is because I had one in my last car and it did everything that I wanted. TV, MP3, DVD, Sat Nav etc. etc. on the one screen. That's the main reason. I just don't like the little "TomTom's" or "Navman's" on the dash, just find it tacky and would like everything housed in the one spot with touch screen if able.

Yeah, protruding objects on dashes are a bit sissy.

You should ask this guy Chris
username is hotwhips88 on cardomain.

He has done it. I just don't know how.

You might have to register to contact the man.

But I did hear someone else who tried it and ended up getting his car towed to the dealer to be fixed.

Hmmm, might also try to actually use the centre speaker and get the Navigation system in there. Probably but a Navman or TomTom now that they just keep dropping in price and raise or lower it as I require. Hence not able to be seen by naughty thieves and there when I need it.

Probably will need to modify the centre speaker though.

I wonder how that guy managed to do it? Maybe he has still got the old stereo unit and just hidden it out of view to allow the screen to fit in it's place. But where would he hide it. Can only assume if he did this, then he would have used the standard AV plug in on the original unit to run the new unit. Best place to hide it would be in the boot with an extended loom running the length of the car to do it. Makes sense at that point.

It would be a shame to lose the centre speaker because that it the most important speaker for Dolby ProLogic.

If you are worried about norty thieves then do it like I did mine and keep the Ipod hidden. Initially I also thought about a display, but realistically I know the title to all the songs on my Ipod and don't really need it displayed. Plus the main purpose is driving the car, not what displays you have. If the tunes are good, and the sound is great, that's all that matters. If you still feel you are missing something, then by all means, make a project of it.

I was more thinking for the sat nav to be honest poopbunny. Wouldn't want to loose the centre speaker as such, just do a similar thing like the cars that came equipped with the sat nav.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, i.e., the pioneer sat nav double-din stereo unit. I had no idea it was so complicated to change out the head unit! I'm taking a cross country trip in October, doing a lot of driving through Mexico and was looking for a nav system with Mexico driving maps. I guess there went that itdea. On another note, are you talking about the the center grille on top of the dash when referring to the "center speaker?" I just pulled mine up and there's nothing there, other than a brace. I looks to be just a vent hole for the interior blower. did I get jipped?

Eurodriver yes the "centre speaker" on top of the dash. This is the bit I am referring to to see if I could get a Sat Nav system to sit in there. Hopefully I will be able to. You didn't get jipped as I believe this was one of the options that these cars came with.

The satnav version had a smaller center speaker.

Some vanilla optioned S80s came with a base HU that had no Pro Logic and hence no center speaker.

Well got the car tonight and I have a centre speaker with a Pro-Logic switch on it, but do not have the Sat Nav option. Man the stereo is good though, never realised how good it actually is.

Interesting. My HU has a button with the Dolby icon on it, but I'm cetain there's no speaker under that grille. Oh, well, I'm not that surprised. I'm definitely going to look into the possibility of stuffing a sat/nav screen in there.
