My wifes 2000 s40 is having trouble starting. I know it's not the battery or the battery connection, this has definately been ruled out. It's very random, sometimes you put the key in and turn it and the lights, radio turn on then you continue to turn the key but it won't turn over???

After several tries it will usually start but it seems to be getting progressively worse. Other than that the car drives great. I've read several threads with similiar problems but no solutions??

Any suggestions?

My 2000 S40 apparently has a similar problem, and no solution yet. It's occurred over the past year - however only in HOT weather (100 degrees or more). It always starts in the a.m., however after driving a short or long distance and stopping, it may not start when I get back in the car! A volvo dealership has had it for 7 days, off and on, driving it, never happens to them. If I wait between 5-25 minutes, it will start!

All the dash lights and electrical come on, but the engine doesn't turn over and the starter doesn't even click or make a noise. I've tried putting the shifter in Neutral, still won't start; tried turning the steering wheel a little, still won't start.

Any help?

i had a problem with my immobiliser cutting in sometimes. check the light for the immobiliser warning on the dash panel works. should come on when you try to start the car. failing that it could be ignition coil, starter solenoid, or just a bad earth on one of the ignition components. either get a current tester or an auto electrition to check it.

You may want to check the fuel pressure regulator. I had a similar problem and it seems to have cured it.

Good luck!

Hi, I think this is commonly due to a problem with the starter solenoid connection. I had the exact same problem, battery was fine, turned ignition to starting position and nothing happened except headlights dimmed. Didn't turn over at all, no sounf whatsoever from the starter motor. At first this happened once and then everything started working normally again, then beacame more frequent. The problem was caused by a dirty connection to the starter solenoid and could be temporarily solved by wiggling or disconnecting and reconnecting the lead to the starter solenoid. This is very satisfying when it works but ultimately the connection needs to be cleaned or the connector replaced!
