hi
ive never had a problem with my v70 till today. i picked up the kids from school but when i went to get back in the car it wouldnt start, the auxillary worked but no ignition and no power, just nothing. just a warning sign saying start prevented try again! i think it may have something to do with the icolater with it having no power at all. ive tried changing the battery in the fob which somebody suggested, and nothing. the car still locks and unlocks. when i got out of the car i used what i call the dog guard, am not sure of its proper name! the bit that makes the sensors not work inside the car so that my dog dousnt set the alarm off. i do this regular and never had this problem. is there any suggestions anyone can give to to check, ive rang around a few garages and nobody can help me, they all tell me to take it to a main volvo dealer, which is miles away and also people have told me that i cant tow an automatic! is this right and if it is why? please help me any suggestions will be tried
thanks for reading this
karen

I had same issue once, scared the heck out of me. About the fouth try it turned over and started.
From a bit before that I had been getting the "dipped beam failure" msg and also every once in a while," slowly pull over and stop, ABS problem". I assume I have some computer problem. tried pulling out all 3 little 5 prong "fuse" under the dash or whatever they are, and they had good continuity. (This was seggested as the problem to others on this forum).

This morning "start prevented" got me too.
After trying some suggested fixes with no success, I disconnected the battery, waited several minutes, reconnected-- it started!
The car goes in for an oil change this week. Let's see what the professionals have to say about the cause of the malfunction.

Hi,
The key immobiliser can cause this message. Built into the key is a transponder that transmits its code (no battery in the key is needed it gets its power from the coil). This is picked up by a coil around the ignition lock.
In the Uk there has been some problems with this coil and I believe Volvo has a bulletin on it?

First make sure you use the key on its own. Don’t have it on a key ring in case other car keys interfere with it?
Other suggestions
Try the spare key. Or if you don’t have one try disconnecting the battery for a few hours. Remember to follow Volvos procedure when reconnecting it (lights on and ignition in position 2 before connecting the battery). Or finally get a good auto electrician to look at the coil behind the housing.

Fingers crossed.
Bob

Do you carry proxy cards or other electronic things on your keyring? in my case my proxy card was causing a nuisance..also heavy keyrings can cause problems too where you have alot of keys pulling key out of ignition.
