I have just bought a 1997 V70 2.5T with 74000 miles on clock and have just had new sensor fitted onto thermostat housing and a new thermostat as cool air kept coming out of vents and lambda light kept coming on . Not sure if its connected but i can now smell exhaust fumes in the cabin when heater blower is on. Car has had new inlet manifold gasket and exhaust system appears sound. If I take oil filler cap off after a long run there is a slight ammount of smoke coming out.

Is there a checklist I should go through to find where exhaust fumes are getting in.

Make sure there is no leaks at all in the exhaust system.If you had a lamba sound light on has the sensor been replaced?Are you sure it is not burning oil from an oil leak?
