How many in North america use the rear fog light? I use mine in the rain, snow or when I am on a lonely road late at night.

I love my rear fog light, and use it all the time. Too bad there is only one : )

I always find people telling me that one of my lights is burnt out. I find that in winter when the snow is falling more people are aware of that light. I asked this question on how many North American really use this light. Because in Europe drivers get upset if you don't use it, under the weather conditions.

I rarely use it. Only in heavy snow, or the highway in rain, etc.

I might be different from other people, but located in Europe, I get upset if people abuse it under the wrong conditions. I only use it when sight is less then 50 meters (40-ish yards?) due to fog or snow. If used at any other time it blinds you more then it does good.

Thank-you all for replying. The reason why I asked this question I have driven in heavy snow, rain. fog here in Canada and do use my rear light I do find it strange that when the weather is bad and I visibility is bad, alot of Volvo drivers don't bother to hit the switch, the same goes for quite a number of europeans car owners here in Canada. I know my Audi has one and I use it. I just find it a very good safety feature for myself because people can see me from some distance. I agree with viking in shorts, when I lived in Europe there was a correct time to use the for light, and during clear days was not one of them I do find the rear light blinding in clear sunny days, but correct me if I am wrong but all cars in europe have the rear fog light right?

Before I had a Volvo I never knew there was such a thing as a rear fog light. Never had a European car before.

Sure! It's the law that each car is fitted with a rear fog light. Same as the white "reversing" lights. (that's why often it's only 1 -> on one side they mount the foglight and on the other they mount the reverse-light)

However, laws around this are somehow country - specific: I know for example in the Netherlands, you are only allowed to have one reverse light and one fog light (=so as to not confuse them with upcoming traffic, etc) whereas in Sweden both reverse-lights as well as fog-lights can be a pair.

I never even realised there's cars without fog-lights :D :D

I first saw rear fog lights in 1980 on my Gulf Oil company car when I was in Bakersfield California. It was an aftermarket product that was installed on company cars in that office. We have very heavy fog in the winter in that part of California so they were great on the many nights I was out at well sites. Heck the fog was so bad sometimes I would pull of the road turn off the engine and lights get out and listen for the drilling rig.

I installed them on both my family cars then took them off when purchased new cars. Now they are in storage because we both have Volvos.

We are now in Northern California I turn my light on when I start to notice that the spray thrown up when it is raining starts blocking tail lights in front of me.

I have two rear fogs and love them. My friends driving behind me have asked me numerous times why I drive with my "brake lights" on in the rain.

Per the comments above, my main use for the rear fog light is when driving on a freeway in pretty bad fog, to avoid being part of a chain-reaction accident. There seem to be a couple/few of these every winter in the CA central valley, which is subject to dense "Tule fog" during the winter. A day or so ago there was an 18-vehicle accident near Fresno. The same things happen in Germany, aided somewhat by the lack of speed limit on most of the Autobahns (Autobannen, I suppose).

on my 850, i cut out the other fog light so now both of my lights light up. better visibility because ny drivers don't give a crap and ride right up your rear. i know that it is wrong, but have given many a "brake check" to tailgaters. for some reason, when they see both fogs on, they will back off. extra benefit. even if i can usually blow their doors off.

I use mine quite often as well. I also modified the other side to work and installed an additional bulb so that now I have two rear red fog lamps! This also has the benefit of easily removing tailgaters from mu bumper! LOL
