HI,
Had my V40 serviced, not by Volvo I add, and ever since the idle/tick over has been very erratic! It hunts up and down and then when you pull up at the lights the revs race up to 2000 and slowly fall down. It drives well but just has this problem. The car is 6 years old and done 90,000 miles.
Any help much appreciated!

Niceandy

My dads 1.6 S40 suffered a similar problem and eventually threw a light up. That was caused by the crank timing sensor. It was £30 from Volvo and really easy to change.

Had a similar problem a while ago though not as bad. I don't know if all engines have one but there is a housing attached to the air inlet manifold containing the Air Inlet Control valve. I took this off and sprayed it with carb cleaner - lots of black deposits come out and it seemed to unstick the valve. Car now idles beautifully.

contains step-by-step instructions on how to do this.
It's fairly cheap and easy so worth a go.

I have similar experiences with idle when engine is warm. It revs dawn to 500 and back to around 750 every 3-5 seconds.. Volvo says I need to have my throttle housing changed. "we have tried to clean it".

The problem started on a vacation when I accidentally filled it with 92 octane. It ran fine but 2 gas-stops later it started.. It might have coked up I guess. It started when I had had the car for about 6 months - engine lamp -. Not until now - over 1 yr after I bought it - Volvo told me (I had another engine lamp flag) which fault it came up with.. By now the Used Car Warranty has expired of course. (In DK this is a £300-350 repair). Any solutions please ? DID they clean it or do they pull my legs ??

I have just decoked mine today and works a treat. Having now disassembled the throtlte body, I can't see why it should need to be replaced unless it has a crack in it or the bellows are in some way gone inside the body.
Try following the instructions on the link above, takes about 1/2 hour to remove, clean and reattached the throttle body followed by the same for the air intake valve.
Well worth it, throttle response will better if nothing else.
