bought a 1996 volvo turbo wagon 850. the vin brings it up as an R. however based on my research doesnt have some of the characteristics of the R package (suede seats, wood trim etc). This is a canadian car if that matters.

whats the easiest way to tell its an R or not?Is there R's without the suede seats etc?

Thats not as weird as calling up volvo high mileage club to apply and them not being able to find the vin number on your car in their Volvo vin database... this just happened to me yesterday. The guy on the phone was like hmmm. "I guess I will just push it through my computer to get one sent out to you" I wonder if this means my car doesnt exist...
The R also had 17 inch rims if that helps.

Am not sure what the other EASIEST way is to do it, aside from the VIN plate...

Hmmm, 17 inch rims is a YES.
And i think a 16T turbo instead of a 15G.
Also check your engine serial number (on the block itself) - but i doubt this is of any help, unless it differs from the one on the VIN.

No, all '96/'97 R's had the same 15g as the 850 turbo.

Interesting point on the turbo, WhiteR. Thanks.

And another that i just remembered, unless the interiors have been changed, the Rs have different colour-toning for interiors. And the steering wheel itself, has like 2 colour-tones if not mistaken.

I think only R's came with the sueds inserts. Also, depending on the interior color, the wood would either be a dark stained with dark interior and a platinum wood stain with the tan interior. The rims are different, also. in inserts on the door panels would be suede not leather. the shifter might, and I stress, might have a wood insert if it is automatic. and I think the speedo is of a higher speed. not sure about canada though, being that you guys got the stick on your turbos and R's we got autos.

Yes that is correct....and for black interior R's, the dash is actually black...as opposed to the dark grey of the T-5's

The only woodgrain shifter in the R line came on the 1995 T-5 R.
