The attached PDF file contains detailed step-by-step instructions for replacing the Heater/AC blower and powerstage (blower resister) in a 1996 850 GLT. I understand it applies to other models as well. But can't provide specific details as to models or years.

Hope it is usefull to others.

Good tutorial. I just did this on my 97.

One thing of note is the blower motor resistor. There are two for the 850. One for cars with the ECC (Electric Climate Control) and one for cars with the manual 0-1-2-3-4 climate control. The resistors are different and do not internchange.

I replaced a manual one (green back). The new part from the dealer was $90 + tax

I have a similar problem. (1994, 850 Wagon) - the blower works only in position 4 (1-2-3-4), I assume it's the motor resistor - want to make sure.

Also, since it's the 1-2-3-4 type blower control switch, I would need the green back motor resistor, right? Does someone have the volvo part number for this?

Thanks in advance.
The tutorial is great.

Yes setting 4 will work with a bad resistor, actually setting 4 works with the resistor unplugged and not even in the car.

I don't know what the part number is, but the name of the part is "series resistance" The dealer was able to look it up in a few seconds. My local autoparts store had a unit made by Worldpac (aftermarket company) but they wanted $144 for it, and the german made dealer part was only $90.

Just called the dealer....$78.
I read on another thread here that there is a fuse involved as well (for the 1-2-3 settings). I'll check that first, and then go buy the motor resistor.

I'll let you know.

Thanks.

Hey everyone I just came across this thread and know it's old but need a little help with the AC blower motor bit. Long story short my unit only operates when set on 1, 2, or 3 and completely shuts off when switched to the 4th position.

Several have suggested it to be the resistor but seeing that there is only one and based off the info in this thread I am now leaning to something else being at play.

Any suggestions?

Almost forgot it's 94 850 w/MCC

So, I'm doing this right now and its pretty easy. But there is a big BLACK METAL deal in the way. It says SRS on it (Airbags?)

Can't take out the blower motor with that in the way, how do I move this?

Thanks

Jeremy

I havent actually done this before. But look around it, chances are the piece is either a part of it, or can be removed. Look for a locking mechanism to unlock.
