The 98 that I just bought began to overheat, one mechanic says that it sounds like a blown head gasket, whilst another says that it sounds like a cracked head.

The car has 150K on it, had the hoses blow on a previous owner, was never abused.

My question is how likely are the heads to crack on these engines? Which is more likely?

Im trying to get an idea of what to do with the car? I got a great deal on it, so I want to keep it, but need to look at my options.

thanks for any input?

if the head gasket is blown it is probably blowing white smoke out the exhaust pipe ... failing that, check the oil, is there water beading up on the dipstick ? it wouldn't usually cause overheating unless you've lost more water than seems likely without your having noticed the mosquito spraying effect out the back of the car before now

I spent more money than I care to admit on an overheating 240 wagon only to eventually find out all I needed to do was go down to O'Reilly and give them $128 for a new radiator and spend less than an hour changing it out ... try it, it's a cheap cure and you will be getting rid of a potential problem in any case

I agree. I had a car that overheated (the hoses would be very hot) and it was simply having the radiator bored out (dipped in a acid solution to remove all the grunt and rust) and changing the thermostat. Then the car had no problems.
