I recently bought my 1998 Volvo S90 in search of a car that I could buy for my wife and be paid off from the start. I paid $4000. It has 164,000 miles and the car is in mint condition inside and out. The engine runs smooth and looks clean as well. The A/C is ice cold and the car came fully loaded with all the options. I see that they listed for $34,000 in 1998 on my model and options. Wow, to think I have a car that someone paid that much and even though it has that many miles, Volvos are known to get a lot of miles from their cars. So, how much did you pay for yours? Thanks....

BTW, do you think I got a good deal?

Sunroof, Leather/Suede seats, prem. CD stereo radio, security system, key less entry, power windows & door, heated front seats, memory front drivers seat alloy rims with Uniroyal tires, paint and body in excellent condition. engine purrs....well kept.

I paid $6000 for mine last year. It has 98000k and was sitting in a garage for three years. After replacing hoses and bushes it's been a great car. All I added was the ipod adaptor so I can play my ipod through the radio.

I paid $3000 for my 1990 760 Turbo about 4 years ago. I got it with 100,000 miles on it. It's in excellent shape and the Kelly Blue Book still lists it around $4000. I'm happy with it. Interestingly enough, I found the original sales receipt in the glovebox. In 1990, the MSRP was $34,850. Funny how significant the depreciation is in the past 17 years. :57:

post some pictures if you can. like to see the different styles and models...

:liebe011:

so, do you think 164,000 miles is a lot and might be a hindrance when I do sell it later? By then it might be around 170-175,000

I bought my 97 960 back in Jan 05 for $10K. Paid that only because the car had 66K miles on it and it had all the service records. It has had the usual minor problems for a car of that age. Now it is as close to perfect mechanically and in appearance as a 10 year old car can be at 84K miles. I had the dreaded wrinkles on all four doors. Bought two new ones and found two more in a salvage yard that were mint. Replaced two AC hoses and fixed an oil leak around the oil cooler. And replaced both headlight wiper assemblies, and the selector gates on the sunroof in the last two years.
The car has every single option available including the winter package and window shades. The only two options I don't have is the air deflector for the sun roof (Looks cheap) and the 6 cd changer in the trunk. I love this car. It is really hard to keep from driving it as a daily driver. That honor goes to my 87 745T with 349,500 miles.

These are of some under carriage shots of aero mods I made to the car for better mileage on the highway. I'm into finding better gas mileage. It's a hobby and something fun to do. BTW this car gets over 31 mpg at 65 mph.
I am also looking into getting the "Volvo Sport Kit" this summer for a little better handling and lowering the car closer to the road. Not an easy option to get your hands on in the U.S. or Canada. I only know of one other 95-98 96/S90 that has ever had it installed. I'm hoping to squeeze another 1 to 1.5 mpg out of her by winter.

The 960 look very similar to the S90. Are they all made the same...volvos? Am I right when told that volvos last a long time? I was worried with the mileage on it as most of my other cars were new or had very low mileage to start. i would never buy a car with 164000 unless i knew it could get another 50,000 miles more...

I am concerned that I wont get back the $4000 I paid for it in a couple of months (actually, I paid $4900.....I didnt mention the $900 for the tags, sales tax, dealer fees etc that I had to paid on top of the base price).

The mileage will be a turn off to some. I thought the car was in such good shape inside and out and didnt really care about the mileage because of it being a volvo. I have seen classifieds across the country selling with same mileage at around $5000 but will it sell? I hope there are other people near me that feel Volvo are good cars and last a long time, otherwise I will lose a lot of money in a short bit of time. :haha:

as for resale value, the used car market seems to be a little bit depressed right now, along with the rest of the economy although the government isn't admitting it yet, since they destroyed it ... your car should sell for more than you paid for it if you maintain it in the condition it's in ... and as for durability, mine has 188,000 on it and I talked with another Volvo 240 owner at my mechanic's place a few weeks ago who had 410,000 on his, so they're built to last ... why would you even be thinking about selling that gorgeous car ? the '98 S90 is one of the best cars ever built, by anyone, no recalls and rare reported problems, you'll have a hard time replacing that car with anything that will give you better service for the next 300,000 miles ... keep it and let us know how it serves you

thanks for the advice. i think what scares me (being a new volvo owner) is that the mileage would typically be a lot on another car. i just have never had a car with that many miles. that is impressive that they get that many miles (i am sure they were properly taken care of). you are right...why would i want to give up such a nice safe car up and get something that might give me headaches even though it might have fewer miles and be only a few years old. thanks again.;)...

This car has since been totaled in a wreck a few days ago and got an insurance check for $6000. not bad for a $4000 investment in less than a month....lol well, no more volvo and now i have returned to the explorer trucks. best of all to you all....

A good friend of mine was selling his 1998 S90 because he was moving for college in NYC. The car was parked under a tree in Gainesville, FL while he drove it, so the spanish moss and other things made the clear-coat on the hood start peeling away, as well as on the trunk. Other than that, it has 125,000 miles on it, every option, and the interior is perfect.

Guess how much I got it for?

$1,100

It's good to have friends.
I plan on using the extra money I didn't spend on the car I was looking for to get a new paint job and replace the front fog lamp, which is out.
