I have just purchased a 2003 XC90 D5 SE, fitted with a shedload of extras, but my question relates specifically to the daytime running lights/BiXenons..

Today I saw an 04car, the same as mine, and it had the small white sidelight type lights, at the lower inner corners of the headlights lit, along with the tail lights, and that was it, I know it was not fitted with Xenons, as it had no headlamp washers..

Anyway, on my car (1st Volvo I have owned) My headlights (dipped) are always on, AS WELL as the small ones in the centre....
as below:

My lightswitch has 3 positions - Off, parking lights, and headlights - The only position that makes a difference is parking lights, when the only lights on are the small white ones and the numberplate/tail ones as pic below:

Also, the small lights at the side of the headlamps, shown below DEFINATELY have buls in them, and are wired in (have had cluster out to check) but WHEN and how do they come on??

Thanks

Mike

IMHO, the headlight switch configuration for Volvo is a bit odd, considering that they prefer the headlight to be always on by default. I guess it's a safety issue to always have DRLs on. I would have preferred the Off and Middle position functions of the switch interchanged. During midday commutes, I'd occasionally turn the switch to the Middle position. Unfortunately, I often subsequently forget to turn it back to Off when I leave the vehicle and thus leave the Park lights on. I wish there was an alarm or tone that sounds off when your lights are left on when you take out your keys from the ignition.

The main difference between the Off and the On position is the ability to maintain the High Beam lights. You can only flash the High Beams when the switch is Off, they stay lit when it's in the On position and you pull on the Turn Signal stalk.

Anyways, the small lights you see at the lower outside corner of the headlamp assembly are turned on by pressing the yellow button on the remote. Along with the small light underneath the side mirrors, this is the only way to have them light up. As far as I know, there are no other purpose for these four set of bulbs.
