Hi

I just placed a deposit on a 2006 S40 D5. I am picking it up next week. Can't wait. It is pretty much fuly loaded (sat nav etc etc). It apparently has the High Performance Audio system. I had 2 questions.

1) The dealer showed me a socket for an IPod to the left of the "floating" centre console and showed that one of the options in the menus for the radio was "AUX" input. I thought 2006 S40s didn't have AUX input. Can anyone shed light on what this is? I can't see how it is the FM module since you choose AUX and not a frequency on the radio. Maybe I don't understand how the FM mod works.

2) Does the HPA system play MP3s?

Thanks

You are correct; the 2006 model does not have an AUX input. I think that the dealer may have shown you a 2007 model. Do you have the VIN? If so, go to http://www.carfax.com and type it in, and see if it says 2006 or 2007.

The premium audio for the 2007 models plays MP3s, but for 2006 and earlier it does not.

Of course, there is always the possibility that your dealer was able to figure out how to install the head unit from a 2007 into a 2006 model; in which case, they are going to make a fortune!

Hi

The car i am buying is on a UK 06 plate. I took the car for a drive and after they showed me the AUX jack and the AUX option on the head unit display - on the same car. I am a bit confused now as it definitely has an AUX jack and a screen option. Any more ideas?

Thanks

So you saw the aux in socket and menu option on the ACTUAL car you're buying? If so, that's what your getting.

Yep. All I know is that the car has done 5K miles, was previously owned by a Volvo employee and has High Peroformance Audio, Sat Nav, GSM phone etc etc. Is it possible it is a Volvo fit FM modulator or is that not possible if there is an AUX option on the display? (I don't know what form the FM modulator takes - I have only just started reading the forum).

I must admit I am intrigued since all the posts on here say no AUX input on 2006 models.

Confused!

I don't get the car till a week on Monday and since it is 50 miles away, I can't go and test the iPod connection. Guess I will just have to wait and see.

Can't wait till I get the car. I am trading in my MG ZT Sports Auto and on the test drive I was very impressed with the D5.

Frankly, I would call the dealer and ask them about it because something doesn't seem right. The AUX in and MP3 capability weren't introduced until 2007. I have talked to my local dealer here, and I e-mailed two different dealers in the US and asked if the 2007 head unit with the AUX in could be retrofitted into a 2006 model and I was told no because of wiring issues, and that the ECU would require new software that Volvo wasn't going to release. I have talked to several different people on several different forums, and everyone was told the same thing.

Though, as I said before, maybe they actually figured out how to retrofit the head unit. If they did, please let us know. I may even consider driving/taking the ferry to the UK to have it done to mine!

Anyways, congrats on the new car! Do you have any mods planned for it?

Guess I'll just have to wait and see. For info, the jack that he showed me is on the passenger side of the car just behind the "floating" aluminium console. No label or anything - just a 3.5mm female socket.

Not thought about mods - what kind of stuff are we talking about?

If you saw the jack coming out of the aluminum console then for sure the previous owner had an FM modulator installed, please also send pictures once you have it so we can figure out.
As ElectricSilver T5 explained in another topic,…….
QUOTE
“a FM modulator converts the output of an iPod (or other type of MP3 player) to an FM signal. It differs from a FM transmitter because it doesn't transmit the FM signal over the airways. The modulator has cables that come out of it which allow you to connect it to the antenna line (or with some cars, directly into the back of the head unit). With a modulator installed, you will still need to tune the radio to a specific frequency, but the sound quality is much better than with a transmitter because it is hardwired instead of broadcasted”.

I'll definitely post some pics when I get the car. Still intrigued because unless I was imagining it, the sales guy def showed me an AUX option on the display of the head unit. I was driving at the time so didn't study it closely. With the FM gubbins, would it still say AUX somewhere on the display?

It is possible. I have an FM modulator with RDS capability that when turned on, says AUX on the display. See the 8th picture that I posted in the first post of this thread: http://www.volvo-forums.com/t5244-st-60-s4...ng-research.htm

TerminalMan,

How did you make out with the car? Did it end up being a true AUX, or an FM modulator?

Hi

Got the car yesterday and I can confirm it has the High Performance SOund System and a "real" AUX input. To get to it, I press "MODE" on the console and it toggles between CD and AUX. When AUX is selected, if I press "MENU", I can choose volume settings etc for the AUX input. Also, the CD player takes MP3s no problems. I burnt a disc with 100+ mp3s and it works fine. I thought it was a bit of a pain scrolling through 100s of tracks but then discovered if I press "ENTER", it shows the folder structure and I can select what I want to play.

To confirm. I am in the UK and the car is on an 06 plate. I think this is May/June 2006.

Is it simply the case that the car I have is a MY2007 model?

Anyway, so far so good and it is fast!

I wonder if the European 2006 model had the Aux input, but the American '06es didn't.

I have an '06 S40, and I have to say, that if I had known they'd put an AUX in the '07, I would have waited a year to buy it.

GRRRR.
