Also some emails have asked me to explain how to replace the cabin air filter. This too is easy. For anyone who is interested, therese are the steps:

(1) purchase a new cabin air filter. You can get this at ipdusa.com. They're about 30 dollars.

(2) remove the old CAF. This is located under the glove box near the footwell light. You can get to the filter by removing the plastic covering under the glove box. This is held in by 2 torx screws. Remove this, and you've reached the CAF.

(3) slide out the old CAF.

(4) slide in the new one. Really, there's nothing more than that.

You'll notice cleaner air almost immediately. It's definetly worth it. I would change the CAF every 5th or 6th oil change.

I've just changed my cabin filter - nice easy job really and cheap too (genuine part on eBay 10)

But I have a question - where the filter slides in there are two openings ...

I have ECC so I fitted (30676419) which I believe is the larger carbon filter.
This went into the rear slot (nearest the bulkhead)

But is there another filter that is meant to go in the front slot ?

If there is another filter are they supposed to be used together ?

No, there are two slots because one slot is used for the traditional CAF, the other is a special filter which works together with the clean air sensor. You can use the better one, but it won't make a difference. Hope that helps.

Sorry, but if I have the IAQS, then I only need to buy the Charcoal filter, like this one? http://ipdusa.com/Volvo-S60/Filters-&-Tune...r/p-74-396-633/
I don't need to buy the other one?
Thanks.

You don't need the other one piercebrew, you only need the larger filter.

So can one get away with the thinner cheaper filter with an ECC on board? I had a thick carbon filter, and I purchased a micronAir filter which seems to be the thinner one going into the first slot. Using this alone will it affect the ECC? Apparently this is a pollen/dust/smoke filter as well.

Followed these directions and was able to do this with little difficulty. The pics linked to post #2 helped as well. Thanks!

changing you cabin air filter can make a big diffence in the indoor air quality of your vehicle. Last time I went to the dealer to get my $15 oil change they asked me If I wanted my cabin air filter changed. I said 'How much?' he told me $120 plus labor. I said I'll think about it. The filters are only $20 bucks and go behind the golve box . easy DIY. saved me close to $200 bucks. They do make a big diffence though, I noticed the diffence right away. when looking for the filters I found a funny article about them.

On the 2006 S60 2.5T after you remove the 2 star screws to remove the plastic panel you have to remove 4 star screws in the filter holder. 2 in front and 2 in back ( which is very difficut to see). The two rear screws are back where the 2 flimsey retaining clips are atteched that hold up the plastic panel. BE CAREFUL not to brake off the clips...they brake off easy. The best way to get the back 2 screws is to lay over the console from the driver's side to the passenger side with a mirror. After you get those off you can pull the filter out. All in all, it is a bit of a pain but hardly worth the money dealers want to change them out.

My older (of two) S60's was really stinky.

The larger carbon air filter is more expensive.

I cleaned the larger one very well with a shop vac and blew it out clean. This is only a partial clean as the carbon actually holds odor particulates.

But, as an ad-hoc help, I added the smaller paper filter. Yes, yes, I know its not the perfectly stock set up. I notice zero airflow reduction at the vents.

With the system running full on A/C, I sprayed Castle brand ammonia-based aerool window cleaner in the air intake vents (to kill any moldiness)

It is amazingly fresh now.

Thanks for the instructions and advice. My mechanic wanted $100 for labor in addition to the filter cost. As a retired person, I'm excited to be able to handle any maintenance myself. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/liebe011.gif)
