I decided to go ahead and do the flush on my 01 S60 instead of the drain and fill. I was a little worried with 109K on the original fluid but I had an extra hand so I decided to give it a try. It was VERY easy and the car seems to shift much better now. Hopefully I won't have any problems with changing over to brand new fluid after having the old in there so long.

The only problem I ran into was that it turned out to be very messy....I ended up taking the drain hose to the upper radiator connection off each time so I could get an exact measurement (counting the fluid in the hose as well). So needless to say.....my motor has a lot of ATF on it now but it will eventually stop dripping....Next time I will leave the hose connected and not worry about the "exact" part as much. I don't know what I was thinking but really did make a mess....ATF on the engine, suspension and the garage floor now! Learn from my mistakes...

Thanks everyone for all the help with this!

Hello,

I have a question for you. Why did you do it yourself, and did not take it to a dealer for example. Because, in order to change the fluids properly you really have to do a flush. And to do it in your garage, you have to chage the oil atleast 3 times and drive the car for few miles between each time in order to get all the old fluid from the torck converter.

So, what fluid did you use? How much did you spend over all? And is it really better to do it by yourself, ruther then take it to a dealer? Because diller charges about $100 USA for it.

You can do it on jack stands. Just drain and fill with the car in gear between fills. I usually change the power steering fluid while its in the air also.

I actually did a flush instead of the drain and fill. Just do a search and there is plenty of information on how to do a flush yourself. By doing it this way it also gets the fluid out of the torque converter. I purchased 12 quarts of Mobil 3309 and flushed the out all the old ATF (not counting the first drain and fill with new fluid) a total of 3 times, which I finally achieved nice clean red ATF.

The reason for doing it myself was....COST. The dealer wanted $399 to do a complete flush as compared to the "at home flush" where I spent a total of $71 dollars. Here is my cost:

12 quarts of Mobil 3309 ATF for $65 (after tax and shipping)
A 3/4 inch O/D plastic hose from Home Depot $6
Plus a roll of paper towls....

I already had a funnel that would work so I didn't have to purchase that either. Also, the milk jug (cleaned) that I used to measure the oil was free after drinking all the milk from it :)

Good luck

I just completed my flush last weekend and it too was a very easy procedure. I pulled the upper hose to the trans cooler, inserted the clear plastic hose in the cooler fitting, started the engine and drained two quarts at a time, each time shutting down the engine and filling two quarts of Mobil ATF 3309, and before long (about 9 quarts) it was running red in the hose instead of brown. I took the car for a test ride and came back to top it off after it was good and hot. I have driven the car 400 miles since then and all seems well. My dealer quoted me $339.00-I spend about $75.00 on the oil and materials (including new o rings for the cooler line). I would highly reccommend the do it yourself procedure-it's easy!

Any idea where I could get the o rings for the cooler line or any other fittings that I need? Do I need to have the wheels off the ground?
Thanks.
