I am now in the market for a new (used) car. I have owned a 1997 Volvo 960 for several years, and though it hasn't been the best vehicle I've ever had, it has done the job. So, I've decided to look at the XC70 for my next car. My budget will allow a 2004, based on the prices I've seen on several auto auction sites.

Just to give a little background, I commute about 50 miles to and from work each day - so I'm looking for good fuel economy. I also have two small children, so I need a roomy, safe car for transporting them. Finally, since I'm on the road so much each day, I'd like to have a vehicle that provides a nice, comfortable ride and has a well-appointed interior.

To be completely honest, my first choice would be to buy a newer model 4-door truck - I've wanted a truck for quite a while - but the fuel economy issue prohibits a truck at this point. So, does anyone have any advice or input as to whether an XC70 would be a good vehicle given the criteria I've laid out? Also, are there any maintenance issues I should be aware of with this model? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Frank

I own a 2003 XC70. It's the most expensive car I've ever had to maintain. New front end at 60K miles and just had to put a new AWD unit in it at 89K miles. These two repairs alone totaled $4300.00. Did you hear me?........two repairs.

My advice would be to buy something Japanese. My wife has a Honda CRV. She just does regular maintenance. Nothing ever goes wrong with it, and although it's smaller on the outside, it has much more space inside. Look at the Toyota Rav4 too.

Unless you have money to burn, stay away from Volvo. It's my belief that Ford ruined that company in short order.

I own a 2001 XC70 with 75K miles and while I have not experienced major repairs outside of regular service, for ride comfort and interior comfort, the xc70 is amazing. I only average 25mpg with my wagon though. My wife also owns a Honda CR-V and it averages 25mpg, has better interior room for front and rear passengers (but not quite as comfortable), offers AWD on some models (my wife's CR-V has AWD), and it has nearly 115K miles and I only change the fluids and a belt here and there. Original steering, drive train, and suspension components with absolutely no troubles! I would highly recommend the Honda Ridgeline since you mentioned a four door pick up truck. I am sure you can get one thats about a year old with 20K-30K miles on it with a strong V6 engine that still averages 22-26 mpg that is in your suspected price range. I love my wagon, but you did mention jap wagons and a four door truck, and Honda is incredibly reliable, highest rated by the consumer guide every year for the last decade and is notorious with Toyota for excellent fuel economy. Best of luck with your research and decisions. Definately test drive different models before making your decision, after all, a 50 mile commute can be hell in an uncomfortable vehicle.
