Hi All

I have a 1993 240 Torslanda station wagon. The electrics to the tailgate are not working, i.e. the rear wiper, high level stop light, licence plate lights, etc. All the connections in the tailgate sem OK and I can't see any breaks in the wiring.

Does anyone know if there is a connector somewhere for the tailgate wires?

Any helpful suggestions, or ideas would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Brit

Did you check the wiring where it passes through the hinges? The connector should be in the roof above the headliner, unless the 1993 model is different.

I second 240on280's suggestion. My 1990 had similar problems. The wiring passes through the tailgate hinges at the top, and in the course of opening and closing the tailgate, the wires are constantly being straightened and re-bent causing breaks in the wires. Fairly common problem in 240 wagons. Check out this link, it's where I bought my replacements from. If you do the work yourself, you may want to have someone available to give you a hand when re-mounting the tailgate. It's heavy when you take the shocks off!

Hi NorcalBrick

I have the same problem with my 1991 240 wagon.

I was trying to pull the wires straight through the hinges without removing them, and decided that wasn't possible.
How important is it to get the actual replacements? I figured I could just move an unbroken part of the sleeve into the hinge and replace the wires them self.

It is best to use the OEM wires. They are more tolerant to the constant bending. This job is a real pain. Avoid it if possible!

I'm pretty sure that every 240 estate / wagon (as you guys over the pond call them) get this prob' at some point.

I've had a couple of 240's both had the same prob' at some point.

Yes, you can move the existing wiring harness so that a new portion is in the hinge. But you still must remove the hinge. Lengthen the wires by about 6" within the tailgate by crimping or soldering lengths of 18-gauge stranded wires. The tough part is keeping the tailgate stable while one hinge is removed. I left the struts on and tied the tailgate down. Also stuff some rags along the top of the tailgate to protect the finish. I have only done the left side (license plate light, stop light, and defogger). I dread doing the right side (wiper and lock). I'm all thumbs and if I can do it anybody can.
