I have both and the Haynes is far better than the Chilton's.
A better one is the Factory Green Books.
If your planning on keeping the car for more than a few years and your going to be doing most of the work on the car get the Green Books from Volvo. These are the ones the service people at the dealer refer to when they run into a problem they can't fix. You can buy them in sections you want so the cost can be kept down. They are not cheap but they are the best way to go. You can order them through your Volvo Dealer or on line from Volvo.

Hey there Miro,

I have the chilton manual and have found it to be sufficent for the majority of my needs. Anything missing can be easily supplemented by internet references.

What manuals do you recommend? I need to replace a head gasket and found quite a few different service manuals for a 1994 940 and was confused. Would these the ones I would want?:

TP1705201 Volvo Svce. Prog. Book 1 (Fault Tracing, Repair and Maintenance; Gr. 17), 1994 Models 850,940,960 printed remove update $18.50 $18.50
TP1706201 Volvo Svce. Prog. Book 2 (Fault Tracing, Repair and Maintenance; Gr. 17), 1994 Models 850,940,960 printed remove update $23.10 $23.10

this is for havenocat, neither one. get the haynes or the chilton from pepboys or strauss or whatever chain auto parts store you have close to you. or use amazon. and for Miro, there is also the bentley books for volvos. those, i think , were only for the british market, but they are very good. good luck.

Pep Boys and Autozone do not have a manual for a 940.

I've called around town to several of their locations and was directed to call Haynes customer service. Haynes told me the only manual they make is a UK manual titled Volvo 940 1990-1996 and they sell it direct for $35. I'm surprised that they've told me this is a UK manual and is not available locally, as the car is so common here in the US.

Is this the right manual or should I be looking for one with a different title?

Thanks for your help!

Chiltons and Haynes are too vague for me-yes they can be helpful @ times-over the years with different vehicles that I have owned-I have found time and time again too little info for the project I am working on--I did waste my money on a chiltons again for my '95 940-This particular manual covers a bunch of Volvo models??-just not happy with it-I did not know that factory manuals could be ordered through the dealer-thanks for the info-The factory manual for your particular make and model is the only way to go as far as i'm concerned-yeah -they are more money but worth every penny-there is a website Helm Inc they offer factory manuals for a lot of makes and models but no Volvo (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif)
