Hi,
I need your help. I'm trying to get this 84 GL smogged. I don't see a bolt anywhere near the base of the distributor. Is that how I would adjust the timing, or am I looking in the wrong direction?

Yes you loosen distributor bolt and turn distributor you can use a timing light if your plastic cover isn't broken. Sometimes you dont set timing in best running spot to pass smog (IE) engine runs hotter to heat up (CAT) catalytic converter

Where is this bolt you speak of? I had an old '76 BMW 2002 with a similar (non EFI) distributor and I have set the timing on that engine... I just can't spot the bolt on my Volvo...

Yeah, I think I'm gonna run the car up and down the freeway to heat up the cat next time I attempt smog check.

Here is a picture of where the distributor bolt is. It's right where the circle is in the picture. You have to use a socket with long extension(s) to loosen it
