Hi all

Newby to this forum.

What are the chances of buying an 03 Volvo S40 2.4 Auto and within days of getting it, experience the same dreaded problem I had on the '99 Range Rover 4.6 HSE, the Volvo replaced?

When starting the car, the external temp display shows "---" or -40ºC (-40ºF). This sensor clearly has a link to the climate control system which then thinks that its "VERY" cold outside (despite it being 33ºC = 92ºF with 90% humidity!!!) and therefore the air con pump MUST be switched off so that the interior can be warmed up for the occupants, IN THIS HEAT!!!

Switched the car off and on several times to no avail. Got home, parked it in the garage, tried again and voila, ext temp sensor showed a realistic reading again with AC working normally.

Is this a known issue? Any ideas?

Kind regards
Philip

I have the same problem with my March 2006 V50. The dealer replaced the external temp. sensor last week but the problem is still occurring. I will be getting in touch with the garage again tomorrow! Will post again if and when the problem is resolved

I have seen this discussed on other forums. The external temp sensor is integrated into the left outside mirror (the little dimple sticking down underneath) and possibly the wiring or the connector between the door and the body could be the cause.

I, too, have had this issue with my 2006 T5 AWD. The Volvo dealer replaced my sensor and now is saying its a known "glitch" in the "ECU" (??) programming and are recommedning that I bring it in for a software update.

Anyone know what that means?

hi it might be similar.... see my reply on this post
http://www.volvo-forums.com/t15593-dual-pr...ternal-temp.htm

Apparently there is going to be a big "campaign" (in the uk anyway) as the shop called it on checking for worn wires in the door pillars as it causes all sorts of problems. i seem to have had all of them so far :(

yours may be related... it will be about 4/5 hours work so you will be without your car for the day but if it sorts it, that cant be a bad thing.

Hope this helps.

( i get the feeling it may be worth someone putting a sticky on the forum for this as when i look on the net A LOT of people seem to have similar problems... Im just glad its covered under warranty :) )
