I have a V70 D5 Auto and it is intermittently smoking (alot). It seems to be most noticeable between 1500 and 2500 revs and the revs flutter when it happens. It is OK if you rev hard or idle and does not appear to loosing power except when the revs flutter. Been serviced but it is still happening. Any ideas?

Thanks
Mark

Check your intercooler...D5's intercoolers tend to split causing black smoke and sometimes low mpg..just spent £600 on mine

My 2002 V70 D5 auto recently suffered from lots of black smoke, high fuel consumption, weird surging and rough gear changes. Car has done 86500 miles and has a full service history.

I took it to a Volvo specialist who found the Turbo Intercooler radiator was mishapen and split. It was replaced under warranty (£400 ish) and it's like a new car!

The on board computer now shows fuel consumption has improved from approx 37mpg to over 46mpg! Power is great and also very smooth gear changes again.

The fault code history showed low Turbo Boost pressure.

I can thoroughly recommend Wrights Volvo of Attleborough, Norfolk. Excellent customer service.

Hope this helps someone else.
