My s60 ( 20,000 miles) has a strange suspension noise. On rough roads it almost sounds like a loose shock. Smooth roads or gradual bumps no noise. Dealer has looked for noise with nothing found. I have been all under that thing and have not seen anything apparant or found anything loose. Bouncing the car up and down doeas not produce the noise. It must be caused by jolts which can be small (little potholes, bumps in road). It is really hard to discern where sound is coming from but I think it is front. HELP!!

Anti-roll bar end links or lower wishbone bushes if I were to guess.

I have similar problem and looking for someone affordable to do the bushes as I believe they are a pain.

Is the problem worse when it is wet / damp?
Could be the seals on the end links failing causing some corrosion on the joint which gets 'worn' off after driving for a while - the noise I experience does seem to stop after a long drive?

I think I can join the club for strange periodic noices.

The noice in my car comes on rough roads, and only from the rear back wheel.
At normal road and speed bumps - nothing.

I don't think there's a difference in different types of weather, but my a slight change when the tank is full (and thereby the back is heavyer).
But then again, when I drove the car yesterday the sound was there, when I took the car for a drive this morning, it was gone (but I know it will come back).

Monday morning the car will go to the dealer for the third time in 2 weeks. May god show mercy and send a sign to the local Volvo garage.

Let me know if any of you guys finds the cure

No reason for noise coming and going. It does only have 20k on it. I'm going to jack it up again and look. It depends on where you sit in car in your interpretation of noise location. I did see a spot where a fuel line connector was hitting body, I will try to isolate that tomorrow. I did spend about an hour under it and then noise was gone, didnt do anything just pushed and pulled on stuff.

I have an annoying sound which sounds similar to what you are describing. A mechanic where I work suggested possibly the strut mount/strut bushing. I have noticed mine is worse when it is colder, not sure if anyone else has noticed that. Makes my Volvo sound like a Yugo, wish I could fix it!

I finally found it. Front sway bar end links. They look fine. When I took them off they moved freely. The one on the right had a VERY slight endplay in one end. Drove car without them on and noise is gone. Going to pickup new today!

Is it safe to drive without them? Do I need to put it back on right away or can I wait until the new ones come in?
Thanks, Adam.

I've got the same noise, and it's driving me nuts. When it rains, there is no noise (maybe the seals expand?)

When it's dry, and you go over very slight bumps at very slow speeds (like 10-15mph), the suspension in the front sounds like it's rattling a bit.

How hard would it be to replace the links on my own? Any help would be appreciated.

I think the links are fairly easy to replace - don't they just screw / bolt on

But strangely my noise is only apparent after some rain / dampness. If we have a really dry spell, the noise seems to disappear.

Mine does the exact same thing. Cold and or wet/damp weather makes my squeaking noise much worse and i was also pointed to the strut mounts and one mechanic even said it could be the strut bearing. The funny thing is is that it only started doing it after I put on my h&r springs and bilstein shocks. Even IPD has never heard of this before and they do hundreds of these installs every month. Dealership also told me that they could not find anything. Of course i cannot get the car to reproduce the sound when they are riding around with me go figure. it sounds hideous especially when i'm turning corners and the driveway drops down or inclines. And it is only coming from the front left side(driver's side) :puzzled:

I just had the strange suspension noise analyzed by the local Vovlo dealer in Orlando, and it turned out to be a cracked upper spring seat. The senior service rep noticed it immediately by pushing the car up and down at the noisy end in question and noticing the strut bolt and the surrounding rubber/plastic parts were very wobbly. Forutnatley, the repair at the dealer turned out to be less than $200.

I recently lowered my car aswell and now i'm getting this strange noise. Like a tinny rattle when it goes over bumps or a pot hole. Worse in the cold.
Only happens at the back though and seems to be coming from both wheels.
Yet when i bounce the car, its quiet. All the nuts are tight.

I would say its bushes but its only just turned 3 years old.??

Anti roll bar linkage someone recommended to another guy. did that help?

Me too. My noise is coming from the front, it sounds to me like the driver's side, but it could be from the entire front end.

It sounds (and I know how subjective this is) like a large, rubber-coated spring being bounced against a table. That is, a dull sound the reverberates quickly and repeats: du-du-du-du.

I noticed it especially when I hit a bump/pothole on entrance/exit ramps; I guess the front end suspension is under more strain then than at other times.

Any guesses?

:crying: Well mine went into the garage and I was prepared to pay to have the strut mounts replaced but they called and said they couldn't hear any noises and couldn't see anything wrong under the car at all.

Disappointing really - sometimes it feels like i'm driving a Lada.

My beloved noisy old motor has gone into the body shop to have the rear bumper replaced (Some very bad person in a pick-up didn't stop in time)

At the moment i'm driving a hired V50 and noticed that when I go over the same speed bumps that make my car creak and clunk - that the V50's suspension seems a little stiffer.

It doesn't seem to bounce quite as much as my S60 so I was wondering if maybe my shocks were worn and this could be the cause of some or all of my noises - or should I not be comparing the V50's suspension with the S60?

I have just recently purchased a used 05 s60 2.5t and today while driving home from getting gas I notice there is a rattling sound coming from my front driver side tire perhaps, somewhere in that area. It happens often when i hit dips or bumps in the road and occasionally when just driving on level ground. It sounds as if something is rattling under my car or clicking. I looked to see if anything noticeable was hanging or loose, but i did not see anything. the problem does not sound major but I am going to give my mechanic a call tomorrow to see whats up. Anyone else possibly know what it could be or have this happen to them before? Any help is appreciated from you guys, thanks.

This is the CRAZIEST damn thing, but ever since I had the engine torque mount replaced earlier this week, the noise I was hearing in the front suspension has gone away. I'm now wondering if the noise I was hearing wasn't the motor vibrating.

I'd suggest you look at the torque mount, see my recent post about it, and get it fixed.

for meemeej, you are in the wrong forum for this, the cars are different, yours is probably shocks and struts.
