Is it considered sissy to get a pair of those mechanics gloves with the knuckle armor and griptastic palms?

I really want a pair but I don't want the other DIY'ers to laugh at me.

I have a pair that I got off my Snap On guy and they protect your hands very well. Even though they are sized correctly to my hands they reduce your dexterity for detailed work. Main tools such as wrenches, ratchets, screwdrivers, etc. they work well. Besides, who is going to see you wear the gloves anyways? My advice is to get them in black and sized correctly, money well spent.

Hey, I resent that. How are we, that mean you also, supposed to do our hair if our hands are all grungy and such? I mean, come on now, first you wear the apron , then the hair net, then the gloves. Don't we all put on our pantyhose before our pants? Okay, enough of that, my wife is looking at me funny, maybe it's because of my spiderman underoos, anyway, dude, get the gloves. I use the latex ones when it's just oil changes and such, but when I am wrenching, the gloves come on. The Mrs. doesn't like rough and chaffed hands on her patootie. :P PS-get the one with the gold lamee on the knuckles, soooooooooooo chic.

I'm not so sure that your wife wants you touching her patootie, rough hands or not.  :whistling:

I always wear gloves now to work on my car. I was hospitalized for two weeks when an infected cut spread to the blood. I definitely want to avoid a reocurrance.

i definitely recommend the mechanix gloves for auto work, they'll save you from the slipped screwdriver, the snapped bolt knuckle buster, and the forgetful hot part grab. Also i fully agree with the latex gloves as well, we should be well past the false bravado and stupid toxic machismo that says there's nothing wrong with getting some used oil on your hands, that stuff causes cancer, so keep it where it belongs and off your skin. There's a reason that no living creature drinks oil to survive, because it will kill you, same can be said in repeated small doses through your skin.

Yeah, that is all true, but it adds just that right flavor to pizza that no sauce can ever achieve. Oh, sorry, my third eyeball is bothering me. :57:

If you're referring to the mechanic's glove that goes all the way to your elbow and is made of heat-resistant material, then YES, OF COURSE, GET it unless you want cuts and bruises and signs of burns allover the hands.

(Afterall, waiting the car to cool down, after a fair amount of driving can REALLY take some time, you know.)

And even if you're just talking about the other common cloth-glove (heat-resistant to some extent, but not water-proof or oil-proof) or the rubber-glove (oil-proof and water-proof but not heat-proof), they are STILL worth the price.

Go for THEM!
Buy all three and keep them in boxes. You never know what you'll be needing next.
(Though i USUALLY just use the cloth-type. They're like RM3.00 for 10-pairs or something. The thicker, the better.) I once had to resort to a pair of gardening gloves, when at my sister's house and noticed that the vaccum-hose at the turbo actuator came loose. Imagine the heat!
:)

BTW, dont be too worried about looking like a ****. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Tonnes of mechanics use them, as they serve a real and present purpose to avoid you from the real and existent dangers that lie within the engine bays of the car.

I once even saw someone donning them to change the tyres.   But hey, it's HIS choice.
:P

Hye, I have a pair of leather gardening gloves that I use when I change my tires. I don't know where those tires have been. :P
