Hello,
I saw the other whole post about speakers and looked through it and needed some help of my own. Alright, I'm redoing the speakers for my friend. He has 1990 Volvo 240 station wagon with the stero located in the upper dash. Alright, I haven't seen the car in a long time so I'm trying to remember what it looked like. He told me he had only two speakers in the front, located on the side of the doors, they stick out. He said he doesn't have any speakers in the back, but does anyone know if there is more then two speakers, and where is the two speakers in the back, if there is any.
Alright, so I want to crutchfield and looked for speakers and they said that there was none that fit in the front of the car and they also said there is speakers above the rear wheel well, so there must be speakers in the back.
So, my question is, is there speakers in the back on this model, is there speakers that can fit the front of the car because he already contacted someone and they said that the speakers in the front, on the side of the doors are too thin for aftermarket speakers and you need a special kind of speaker, so i need help finding some that will fit. So, please help me with my two questions, thanks for your time!

Volvo sold optional rear "VolvoSound" speakers for 240 wagons that fit in small panel just in front of the rear seat, above the wheel well. These occasionally show up in Junkyard 245s. I have a pair in my wagon.

Alright, so there is speakers above the wheel, i thought crutchfield was right, they are never wrong, lol. So okay the back speakers, are they thin too just like the speakers on the side of the fron doors, because those are really thin, so any aftermarket speaker wont fit. So, what are some aftermarket speakers that will fit, thanks again!

They are almost identical to the standard front speakers, but they have a square base while the fronts are slightly rectangular. I haven't measured how much space is available to fit a deeper speaker cone.

I didn't have any problems fitting a 4" up in the front. I just mounted my rear speakers in the doors.

okay, so any 4inch speaker should fit the fronts, when i type it into crutchfield, they say that there is no aftermarket speakres that will fit the front door panel, and the back speakers i should have no problem with because any 4inch will fit, that doesnt seem to be a problem.

With the front speakers you'll see that there is a step in the inner door panel which makes if difficult to fit circular speaker covers without a spacer. This may be why Crutchfield shows no aftermarket speakers will fit. So the speaker will fit, but its cover won't.
If you want to retain the factor look, you could cut the front off a blown 240 speaker chassis, fit this over the new speaker and if it clears the new speaker cone attach the original 240 speaker grill to it.

This is what I plan on doing with mine, using polk speakers.

i came across a site with all of the speaker specifications for the 200 series.. it's in swedish/dutch though..

http://www.volvo200.org/accessoires/luidsprekers.htm

in my car i've got the ht-204 speakers in the front doors and ht-168 in the rear doors.

Hmm. That's weird that crutchfield couldn't find speakers up front. I had no problem finding ones for my 1980 wagon. Maybe the years make a difference?

I have a quick question, what do you mean when you say step in the inner door panel. And so your saying that I can fit 4inch speakers in the front if I just purchase some spacers, but the speaker grill wont fit. This makes since because the problem with it is the volvo doors are so thin there is no space for some depth, but I could put spacers to make the speakers stick out more and just have the magnet in the same place the ones are right now. That would work because I have no interest in retaining the factory look at all, so it doesnt matter what it looks like whatsoever. So, if there is no speaker grill and they stick out, thats fine with me. Alright, so its 4inch speakers in the front, but also a quick question, is there any way I could perhaps get up to 5inch speakers in the front? Also the spacers, can you purchase those on crutchfield or where that would fit the volvo?

And also, when looking at crutchfield some more, I noticed they also said that there is speakers in the read doors, again were these optional like the ones behind the head rest, and I figure if it is, the rear doors will have the same problem as the front with the thiness, where i can just use spacers. But the speakres behidn the head rest, do those also have a limited depth too, or shoudl just any aftermarket 4inch fit there fine, or would i have to cut a hole in the panel and let the speaker stick out and use spacers. Also, could I possibly put 5inch speakers in the back too, i assume this would be true depending on the other question putting 5inch in the front. Thanks again for all your help, take care!

Well come to think of it I just used 4" blaupunkt's that had their one grill. Black on black with a little emblem. Nice and low key. Turned out pretty good I think.

The speakers in the rear door had no problems because they are low enough in the door that the window won't interfere. You could put 6x9's down there if you wanted.

Why not fabricate your own? Find some thick plastic or a sheet of plexiglass and just cut your own. It doesn't have to be pretty.

Well I would recommend plexiglass in all honesty. I mean anything else is gonna rot. I suppose if you know a machinist you could make a steel spacer. Just brainstorm.

I guess buying a special kind of speaker would be the best way. You won't have any difficulties in finding volvo accessories that will fit in your car.

Yeah, I want an aftermarket speaker and I already have some audiobanns, i just need to create some more space in the door because the olvo speakers are soo thing, the new speakers would have ot stick out, so i need to create some speaker spacers, which im trying to find a place that sells them.
