I went to pull a flat tire from my '05 S60R and discovered that the factory lug wrench doesn't fit the lugs - it looks to be the right one for an S60 and my XC90, but the R has huge chrome lugs very snugly fitted in the wheel recesses.

Is there supposed to be a different lug wrench, or an adapter, in this model? Since mine appears to be lost or missing (meaning it either wasn't in the car when I bought it or the dealer - the only place to have removed the wheels - misappropriated it), what tool will work to remove the lugs? It looks to be a 24-26mm head but needing a VERY thinwall socket to get around it.

I've searched this forum and the web and appear to be the only person to ever encounter this problem. :)

Help - thanks in advance - arrgh.

Problem solved, and I'll enter the information here to get it into the bitstream; I really can't be the only person to ever run into this problem. Or maybe I am and you can bookmark this for the stupid file. :)

Long story short: the S60 R-type wheels have lug nut beauty caps. They don't look like caps, and they ting like metal, and they hold a magnet - yes, I checked all these things. But the cap has to be pulled off to reveal the standard 19mm hexes underneath.
  • Is this in the manual? Nope.
  • Is it in some little R-model addenum? Nope. (Not quite.)
  • Did the dealer service folks know this when I called? Nope.
  • Did the dealer parts guy know this when I called about the proper lug wrench for an R model? Nope.
  • Did "Volvo" (I a s s/u/me the regional or national parts and service folks) know when the parts guy called them with the head service tech standing by? Nope.
I had to take the car in (no mean trick with a slow-leaking tire) and ask... the service manager, the parts guy and a service tech, in concert. Nope.

Finally, some tech in the back remembered there was a beauty cap, and supposed to be a little tool to remove them.

Sure enough, in the bottom of the tire well was a little rolled bag - no markings, far too small to be a lug nut adapter or anything applicable to the problem. Inside: little hooked tweezers and THERE the instructions for removing the caps. I had picked this bauble up and put it back a couple of times, assuming it was a fuse puller or some other irrelevant item - because I never clued that the damn things were caps.

So there you have it. And don't lose this little tool once you find it, as I'm not sure what other tool would remove the caps without damaging them.

*Sigh*.

(Punchline: the tire shop guy knew. He was yanking the tire out of the back of my 90 and I said, "I had an 'ellvua time getting that off..." and he instantly said, "Yeah, they have caps.")

*Sigh* again.

Nice one

Simple but great anti-theft device don't you think ?

I wonder where you get them from - I assume they are a Volvo part since the tool was in your kit ?

They must look better than the ordinary rusty looking nuts.

Nice story!

I had the dealership install these on my S60 when I bought it CPO. The lug bolts were rusty and they said that they would throw in the "beauty caps" since they couldn't sell me a car with rusty nuts!

The tool is a necessity to take them off and they can be a bit of a pain, but the look makes up for the inconvenience.
