I have a 2004 xc90 and the transmission service urgent light came on. I was not having any problems. I brought it in and they ran a diagnositic and then downloaded new software. They then told me I needed to replace the transmission for $5400. The car only has 59,000 mi. Since this service call the shifting is problematic with high revs and then knocking into 2 and 3rd gears. pper gears are OK. Volvo does not rebuild, only replace. I complained that this was my 4th volvo and they first offered to reduce the cost by 10% and then by 50%, still $2600 plus tax. Any suggestions.

Warranty is 3yrs/100,000km (60,000mi) in Australia, what is it in the US? should be replaced under warranty.

I believe it is 50,000 in the US. A friend of mine started to have transmission problems at 45K. The dealer denied knowing of any problems with this particular transmission, but he found this not to be the case.

After several roadside problems (slipping & loss of power on the road) The dealer eventially replaced it.

At 40,000 miles our transmission wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear. Transmission was replaced under warranty without any problems. I hope we aren't looking at another transmission at 80,000 miles.

not the only one. Have 2004 T6AWD and had full transmission replaced, under warranty, at 30,000 miles. Dealer mentioned it was "unusual"....

I am in Australia and have been buying Volvos since 1978.

We have a 3 year 100,000 klm warranty with the option of purchasing an extended warranty of a further 3 years.

On any occasion that I encounter a problem with service or warranty, both within and outside of warranty (if not too long outside) where the dealer is not co-operating I contact Volvo in Sweden by e-mail.

This usually results in Sweden contacting Head Office in Australia who then contact both the relevant dealer and myself.

The problem is usually resolved to my satisfaction.

On the last occasion the dealer was displeased with my course of action indicating that they had "copped a serve" from Head Office. I responded that if they had acted in a reasonable manner it would not have escalated to that level.

We too had a full replacement (T6 2004 Auto - Singapore) and it was just inside the 3 year warranty, at approx 45000kms I think it was or 2.4years old. We get 3 years or 60,000 kms which ever comes first. seems about 20,000 per year for our driving style.

They offered a 1 year warranty on the replacement but if something dies in the gearbox I will be going to our consumer watchdog and formally requesting 3yrs as its such a big and significant component of the car.

I have heard of otrhers too with similar problems but maybe they have not found this forum.

I am on my 3rd transmission. I wasn't so lucky. I was out of warranty. I had to buy transmission #2 but not #3. The second one was replaced at 88,000 and the third at 106,000. It's a 2004.

I have a 2004 2.4D5 model that has done 43000 miles without any transmission faults. I am not the first keeper of this car so not sure if problem has already occured. I hope this is not a common fault.
