Just like to say for some reason I got it in my head that it was time to look into a newer car so what would one do after driving a 1989 740GL for 9 years take the step to an 850, seems like a sort of natural progression, Wrong !!!!!, I got rid of my 740 for an 850 and it took about a week to realize i'd made a big mistake, horrible, at least after my 740. I wanted my old car back but it was sold on, I must say I did buy an 850 automatic and that was another boo boo, didn't like the automatic, didn't do what I wanted it to do. I've got a 940 now which is better but still not the same as my old 740. So before you consider selling your 740 for an 850 see if you can try it out for a week or so . :(

You guys across the pond got all the cool stuf. Here in the USA 940s stopped in 94 :(

So after my 91 244 took a turn towards being a project car. i got a 97 960. I miss being abe to drive my 240 so much, oh well. when it gets back on the road it should be able to pull of a 13 second run in the 1/4 mile.

In short im jealous of what you have.

Amen,

In all of the Volvos that I have owned none of them have been as trouble free as
my old 86 740 wagon. Great gas milage, comfortable and an absolute tank.

I miss it.

I have to say that my 89 740gl has been pretty good to me as well. I had several 84 240 with the b23f motors but my 740 has not done wrong by me. I have 224000 miles on it and counting. I want to get an XC90 but don't want to get rid of my 740.

I got rid of my 740 for an 850, lot faster, better handling, big mistake. There is no car like the 740 and now they are so cheap even for a decent one. The 740 gave me no problems, had it for 13 years and only let me down once. The 850 dropped oil (oil seal, common problem), the brakes went spongy, we tried everthing to fix it. Now got a mercedes 180, got disillusioned with the later volvos . I keep looking at 740s on ebay and think as a second car, should I? - Roy

Have heard a lot of pros and cons on the 850. Have owned two 240's and now a 740....loved each one of them and am especially happy with the 740...i do like the 240 looks a little better though, but both models are solid reliable buggies...hope you can locate another one for yourself..

I will never get rid of my 740, mr grandad gave it to me so it has sentimental value too. Though i do also have a 93 940 turbo which is fast as ... it does bout 14 sec on the 1/4mile atm standard (albeit stripped out).

the 740 isnt very happy about this, as its on the drive atm, she refuses to run properly and some thigns dont work, but if i take her off the drive and use her for a week she is fine!!! jealous car!!!

mind she is on the drive for an exhaust repair atm, was doing a bit of drifting and erm ... a bolt came undone and erm .... exhaust + road dont mix!

My favorite is my 97 960. Love that car but don't drive it much because of the around town gas mileage. She is my dedicated highway car.
I wish I had my first Volvo again. It was a 1981 Turbo 242 with a M46. It was such a fun little car. I'm in your boat my DD is a 1987 745T and it is a really good car but little things are starting to get on my nerves.
I've been looking but haven't seen anything I really want. Oh I may want it I'm just not willing to pay what they want for the car.
Still planning on replacing the 745 next spring or summer since it does have 363K miles on her.
I'm just not going to spend money on a car that doesn't beat the fuel mileage of my 745 by at least 5 mpg city and highway by 10 mpg. She gets me 22-23 city and 29-30 mpg highway.
