hi guys.I just got a '91 940 se and i am not familiar with it yet but the rpm in idle looks low to me.the needle stays on the first line after 0 and i am thinking is 500.Is that how suposed to be?I also hve a noise like a ticking watch in the engine .i hear it close to the distributor. That ticking goes faster when i acelerate and is more noticeble when power is required from the engine{when i start from a red light for example].I already changed the spark plugs ,opened and cleaned the distributor which looked ok.How do i check the plugs wires?i dont want to buy new ones before i make sure the old ones are no good.that car has 327000km on it and i got to make sure it will pass the winter[it will be -35 soon around here].any help will be apriciated.Thanks.

these engines normally tend to idle in the 500-800 rpm range, just depends.

the ticking noise, it's most likely piston slap(sounds kind of like a diesel) or the valve silencers(little rubber things) are shot, old,or non existent.

none of these are bad, they are just the nature of the beast

nothing needs/should be done to it, from your description, it the normal sound all 85-92 volvo 4 cyls sound like.

in the 93+ engines they added piston oil squirters for the sole purpose of keeping that noise to a minimum.

Hi impulse and others
I have a 93 that started making the clicking noise, just recently. Could there be something I need to fix or replace now the the ticking started? Or could there be another problem somewhere?

Thank you
The Muffin Man (from the movie)
